Attention then moves to different co-ordinate systems, primarily those with cylindrical or spherical symmetry. Hence a discussion of special functions arises quite naturally, and in each case the major properties are derived. The next section deals with the use of integral transforms and extensive methods for inverting them, and concludes with links to the use of Fourier series.

Useful as a first reading

This textbook treats the subject of partial differential equations
on a quite elementary level. In a leisurley fashion (no definitions
and proofs) the subject is developed for readers having only a
background in analysis of several variables and the theory of
complex functions. Very nice is the introdction to the theory of
distributions. Here and in the other parts of the book the emphasis
is on concrete calculations in science and engineering rather than the
mathematical structure of the theory.
The book covers separation of variables, Fourier and Laplace transforms
and the theory of Green functions. Exercises with solutions make
this book well suited for self study. However there are not many
but more than a few mistakes and inaccuracies, which could make
the book hard going for beginners. But by patiently solving these
issues the reader will benefit from this text

Good as an introduction

This text is a more or less modern approach to a classical subjet. The way it tackles the solution of PDE's, though stated in a modern language, is indeed dated, I mean, it employs mostly the traditional "down-to-earth" analytic approach instead of the more modern and efficient operator approach. However, undergraduate students will find it very useful to get acquainted with practical methods for actually solving PDE's, and then they can proceed to deeper study on the analytic properties of the solutions (the real goal of abstract PDE theory).
Some of the topics covered in the book are orthogonal functions, separation of variables, the characteristic method, D'Alembert's method, integral transforms, Green's fuctions, and more.
