Kira Johns was born and raised in the southeastern US, where she spends her days working as a paralegal in the criminal defense field. When she's not working or writing, Kira spends her free with her husband, children and pets. She enjoys spending time outdoors, whether on a boat or on the back of a bike. Kira, her husband and children are all avid competition shooters. She is also a huge supporter of Feathered Friends Forever, the Nation's Largest Non-Profit Tropical Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary located in Harlem, GA. Not only does Kira donate a portion of all her sales to this worthy organization, she also dedicates her time to helping the many birds at the facility. The Satan's Rebels MC Series was the beginning of Kira's venture into writing. Destroyed, the first novella in the series, was released in August 2014. Destined, Book 2 in the series was released in September 2014, with Deserved, Book 3, having been released in October 2014. It only hurts when you start pretending it doesn't...

Wow! This book was not what I was expecting. It took me on a roller coaster ride of suspense that kept me hanging on for dear life. I had my hand over my eyes, afraid to see what what coming, but unable to resist peeking. It was a dark ride, with only a few glimpses of light as I passed through the tunnels. I kept watching ahead, hoping that after the next bend I'd find what I was looking for, answers. "Darkness--the absence of light." How much darkness can a person experience without giving into it? How much pain is too much? At what point do you stop seeing the good in people and see the bad? How long do good memories last before the hopelessness overrides them?

The relationship between Jax & Alana started when she was only 6 years old. They met in foster care and became friends, depending on each other when the ones that were supposed to care for them didn't. They sacrificed and protected each other, ready to do whatever was necessary...and it was. They trusted each other, believing that they would always be together...until they weren't.

As I turned each page, my eyes were glued to my kindle, as I held my breath...waiting...hoping...and ready for IT to happen. I needed IT to happen. I couldn't resume my life or move forward until IT happened. Why could I see some things so clearly and other things remained hidden? My heart was breaking for Alana as I resided safely inside her head as she experienced the horrors she shared with me. Some of them were so bad that she pushed them to the back of her mind, hiding them from herself. I guess it's better that way, easier to move on, right?

I didn't meet grown-up Jax until later, but it was memorable. He made a lasting impression. He was just existing, not really living. He was a survivor. His heart might be hardened by his experiences, but it was still there. He had lost a lot, but he was not lost. He had found a new family. The Forgotten Souls MC, and his best friend Deuce, taught him that "blood makes you related, but loyalty makes you family."

"When love is true, it waits." So, I waited...anticipating...projecting my feelings onto the characters...bossing them around and telling them to get it together before my heart palpitations did me in. I sighed...melting...knowing their feelings but unable to manifest the actions to make everything all better. I cringed...seeing the evil that was hiding from her, but visible to me. I blushed...cuz the author knows how to write a sexy scene. I cussed...I'm sorry Kira, but you have to admit, you deserved it. And now...I'm waiting again...for the next book in the series, I'm sure it's gonna be as amazing as this one.

Rollercoaster of feelings!

After reading Destined I didn't think I would ugly cry through a book again. I was wrong. I loved Jax, I wish he were real so I could keep him. I felt so bad for Alana just when you thought things were looking up for her they went bad again. I have a love hate relationship with this book. I hate that I loved it so much. I will be totally honest the ending shocked the crap out of me! I would recommend reading this book!! But I will warn you be prepared to cuss, scream and cry! Lol

SHE DOES IT AGAIN!

I was pulled into the lives of Alana and Jax from the beginning and held there until the end. Emotions being pushed and pulled in all directions throughout the book makes for an excellent story. The end had my heart beating so fast, tears blurring my vision making it difficult to see the words and left my heart with both an emptiness for what was and so full of happiness for what is. Well done Kira Johns. Waiting (im)patiently for the next book.

About the Author

Drink in this great, gorgeous, real and holy, "juicy" love!

I eagerly awaited the arrival of An Uncommon Bond both because I have great admiration for Jeff Brown's courageous voyage into dissolving the walls between spirituality and emotional healing and because I have always been a miner for great love and a believer that love is a gift that comes from the higher realms. To read his telling of the hero's journey through an experience of profound love that shakes the very foundations of his beingness is to grow more capable of the honesty, courage, humility, unconditionality, and presence needed to even begin to sustain a great love. He writes this story to move us all forward in our vision and capacity for experiencing God/All That is (whatever words that work for you) through the juicy, embodied experience of lovingly bringing ourselves ready to each other, healing into wholeness, vulnerable, present, creative and vibrantly alive.

If you are on a path of the heart, an embodied path of spiritual illumination and emotional healing into wholeness, this book is SO for you. It will not disappoint. You will be moved in your depths, subtly or not so subtly transforming your relationship to yourself and to love. Another reviewer described it as the different male and female wild inner worlds and consciousness. It is that, yet it also has Lowen and Sarah in the less stereotypic roles when it comes to who is more avoidant and who is more grasping. It would be fantastic to have a telling of the tale from the Sarah's side, as we mostly peak in on her experience through male eyes of the writer and the main character.

Imagine...if the world took to this book the way this country has taken to 50 Shades of Grey...what each of our experiences of the world could be! They are twinned opposites. 50 Shades of Grey exploiting the old power over paradigm, the armored warrior and the vulnerable maiden going into battle that causes pain and anguish, punctuated by a sexuality that is not heart centered and certainly not an expression of our connection to the Divine.

We, who are un-armoring each in our own ways, will be warmed and soothed at the hearth-fires of this extraordinary book.

disappointing

I was expecting better after seeing the poignant posts on this books Facebook page and was pretty disappointed..
Jeff obviously has great understanding of different types of relationships, being he is in the psychology speciality of work and I am in agreement with him about all the different types of relationship we are capable of having and how complicated they are .. many people do try to simplify this area of life but it is much more than meeting the love of your life and getting married.

For me the emotion was not fully conveyed with empathy and I could not feel what I was reading. Maybe the characters were not strong enough or maybe Jeff either has not fully experienced love in the way he writes of, or cannot effectively express it in writing.. I am not sure where the fault lies. There are too many unexplained disappearances of the characters, non explanation of changeable moods - the reader needs to know why these are happening to feel the emotion. Needs a plot to keep you hooked too, it seems to revolve around them going to endless yoga retreats, large parts of work-time were altogether skipped, when the emotions of mundane time apart could have been further explored. There are hardly any other characters apart from the main ones - and you didn't get to feel them as people either.

It is all a bit 2Dimensional which in no way conveys the full bodied, all absorbing feelings of Soul-mate/Soul twin relationships. It is there in words but not in feeling & rather clinical when they start discussing therapy.

However the use of Sanskrit throughout was very lovely as were the settings of the retreats. The love dictionary at the back was also beautifully explained and useful to anyone who is trying to find their way through an uncommon-bond type relationship in life.

For several years, the armies of Napoleon III deployed some 450 Muslim Sudanese slave soldiers in Veracruz, the port of Mexico City. As in the other case of Western hemisphere military slavery (the West India Regiments, a British unit in existence 1795-1815), the Sudanese were imported from Africa in the hopes that they would better survive the tropical diseases that so terribly afflicted European soldiers. In both cases, the Africans did indeed fulfill these expectations. The mixture of cultures embodied by this event has piqued the interest of several historians, so it is by no means unknown. Hill and Hogg provide a particularly thorough account of this exotic interlude, explaining its background, looking in detail at the battle record in Mexico, and figuring out who exactly made up the battalion. Much in their account is odd and interesting, for example, the Sudanese superiority to Austrian troops and their festive nine-day spree in Paris on the emperor's tab. The authors also assess the episode's longer-term impact on the Sudan, showing that the veterans of Mexico, having learnt much from their extended exposure to French military practices, rose quickly in the ranks, then taught these methods to others.

This is the story, recorded in detail for the first time, of an exotic incident in African-American relations in the mid-nineteenth century. Secretly, on the night of 7-8 January 1863, an under-strength battalion of 446 officers and men with one civilian interpreter sailed from Alexandria, Egypt in a French troopship for service with the French expeditionary force in Mexico. They were being dispatched by the ruler of Egypt at the urgent request of Emperor Napoleon III to replace French troops who were dying of yellow fever in unacceptable numbers in France's ill-fated 1863-1867 campaign to establish an imperial presence in Mexico. Most of the Sudanese troops had been forcibly acquired by the Egyptian government, which avoided the stigma of slavery by emancipating them at enlistment and holding them as military conscripts for the rest of their working lives. The French command at Veracruz was ill-equipped to receive this utterly un-French battalion. The reasons for this lay possibly in restricted attitudes, which made little provision for understanding the ways of non-European people. Even so, a sense of common humanity ultimately prevailed. In four years of patrolling and campaigning together, the Sudanese were never goaded into mutiny and the French developed a permanent admiration for their African allies. A Black Corps d'Elite follows these Sudanese soldiers as they embark on their journey and describes in detail their experiences in a distant and extremely foreign land. Hill and Hogg frame this story with unsurpassed descriptions of how the French and the Mexicans viewed Sudanese fighters, and how the conscripts' participation in this war was received in contemporary American andEuropean circles.

A life-time accomplishment by two world-class experts.

Two great experts on the history of the Sudan coordinated a fine study of the only time a force of regular African troops were deployed to the New World. Taking place during the French intervention in Mexico, this is the story of a battalion of Sudanese infantry who fought against Juarez and his Mexican patriots.
Hill and Hogg start off with a look at the Sudan during the first half of the 19th century. Then part of an Egyptian empire, they explain why these soldiers would be sent to Mexico, and how this impacted on Egypt's foreign relations.
The work covers a wide range of topics, ranging from recruitment, training, deployment, and combat. Also nice is a look at how the surviviors played important roles in the failing Egyptian empire of the 1870s-80s.
American, French, Egyptian, and Sudanese sources are employed. An interesting work that will proabaly never be surpased. Sadly, it was Richard Hill's last book.

Who knew this happened.

A strange moment in US, French, Mexican and Egyptian/Sudanese history. I was totally blown away by the historical even this book depicted. Very academic, though... the author could have spiced it up a bit, told it in a bit more of a narrative flow (especially given the subject matter).

Very good use of the Arabic and French sources. I would have liked more details about the reception in Paris after the return from Mexico.
Also intriguing: any follow-up on Egyptian deserters remaining in Mexico?
As the author of a book published in 1979 ( From Adversaries to Comrades in Arms, West African Troops in the French Army) I fully appreciate the research work.

Dorland's Pocket Medical Dictionary

I am a professional medical provider (physical therapist) and am currently taking courses in medical coding. This dictionary has been invaluable for quick reference. So far, I've found very little that is not in the pocket version. I also have the unabridged version but find it too clumsy to carry around. This dictionary is my favorite reference, usually a "go to first" and very reasonably priced.

I have been purchasing different medical dictionaries within the last 35 years. Although Taber's Medical Dictionary is my old-time favorite, I also needed a pocket medical dictionary for quick reference. Dorland's Pocket Dictionary is extremely useful, and informative. I found it to be as helpful as Taber's Dictionary, and it's packed with tons of information, as well as providing illustrations. The medical terminology is right at your fingertips as an excellent quick reference guide, and I always carried it around in my tote-bag. As a Pocket Medical Dictionary, it comes in very handy when needed, and is worth every penny. Highly recommended to all healthcare professionals!

Compact & Well Bound

This is a very nice reference material. It's got great binding and a nice bendable yet resilient cover. The middle section is all anatomy pictures which is very helpful in a reference guide. It also comes with a code for the Dorland's online medical library and medical spell checker. I was hoping this would be light enough to carry in my bag to wherever I'm studying but it's a pretty heavy reference material, that's my only criticism- and really, it has to be heavy to be what it is.

Outstanding contribution in a crowded fitness industry

As the title suggests, this book is very specifically targeted to people who have a hard time gaining muscle with exercise. It is not specifically a strength training program, and it is not a conditioning program. The emphasis is on avoiding the things that work for elite bodybuilders or work best for lifting more weight and on avoiding the mess of internet marketing hype, and instead focusing on the principles that work best for people who gain muscle very slowly and with great difficulty.

The program is based on training the entire body in each workout in a sustainable way to get enough stimulation for muscle development without taxing the limited recovery capacity of the hard gainer.

The way this is approached to go back to basics with the the concepts: (1) muscles are recruited by the nervous system not by the weights, (2) learning how you should feel from training is more important for stimulating your muscles properly than watching for strength targets, and (3) eating properly for gaining muscle is not a matter of bulking up or special diets, it is a matter of getting enough nutrition to recover properly from training.

The way the program accomplishes these basics is by using a strategy of high repetition complexes per body part at a very deliberate cadence to train the entire body in each workout so that you get enough stimulation to encourage muscle growth without exceeding your capacity to recover.

The program allows for exercises to be swapped out with similar ones and for different variations of repetitions and weight progressions within a session, but not varying the overall range of repetitions for each exercise. The specific repetition ranges used and hitting the body parts according to the "peripheral heart action" principle are the central hard rules of the program. The program is not intended for fast results in the short term, it is intended for reliable results in the longer term, and the author suggests a one year commitment to the program. The Kindle book contains lists of exercises, and provides links to a printable PDF for convenience and to videos of the exercises.

This seems like a very solid approach to gaining muscle compared to most of the heavily co-marketed and over-hyped programs I've seen available on the web. This is not a program of magical fast results, fad techniques, superficial sciencey citations, or mixed objectives. This is a program and set of principles very specifically intended to go back to the simple goal of putting muscle on people who have failed at that goal consistently in the past.

The only thing I found to be a negative here was that it isn't easy to actually do this program without a lot of work if you aren't already an experienced lifter or a coach. It will help a lot if you are already familiar with weight training because this is not a primer on how to exercise. There is nothing preventing a novice from using the associated videos to help learn the exercises and the design of the program is all about learning as much as it is about training. But I am hoping to adapt some of these principles to my bodyweight training for example, and that seems like it will take a bit of thought and a learning curve. I think it will be well worth it though.

I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy and have been following Scott Abel's programs, blogs, forum and some of his books since an undergraduate. Throughout I can say that everything he does and says can be backed up by high level research if he hasn't already provided it and the sources for you, most of the sources are from graduate level textbooks and peer reviewed journals. I merely pull up the sources to trust, but verify. You have to question things, I just want to tell the reader that this has been done and that you can trust him and the quality of his products. I can say that any of his products are worth well more than what he charges.
When you combine this dedication to quality along with his priceless years of experience and Coaching and you are provided with what could be called evidence based practice or evidence based training.
The only reason I placed my job title at the beginning of the review is because I fear that someone might pass this or another Scott Abel product up for something else and if the title helps then it's worth it. I hope this lends support to the reader, if the other fantastic reviews of support have not already, to the fact that Scott's training, experience and know-how are supported by sound physiologic and muscluloskeletal science and research.

The information and knowledge that Scott Abel provides is fantastic! But the workouts he provides are difficult to perform in a busy commercial gym. There are many super set / giant set type workouts (called complexes) that require different types of equipment (i.e. seated cable flyes/ leg extensions) to be used in succession without a break. In my gym, these pieces of equipment are not near each other and the rule is, generally, once you're off a piece of equipment someone else can take it - and usually does.

There's certainly no shortage of software design methods: most demand total allegiance, and many claim to be the only true way to delivering useful and maintainable software systems in a timely manner. Contextual Design describes another worthwhile software engineering method, one that places the user (or customer) at the forefront of the software design process from beginning to end. This method seems to be a particularly worthwhile addition to the literature.

Contextual Design begins with contextual inquiry, where software developers interview users and attempt to understand the way they work. Such "customer empathy" is central to the Contextual Design process and a total understanding of "work" within organizations is the mantra here. The book describes how, later in the process, software developers step back from the user data and do an "affinity," which is an overall analysis of hundreds (or even thousands) of individual facts. Contextual Design then explains the additional steps required to build systems using this method, including building models for flow, sequence, and artifacts, and establishing the cultural and the physical environments for a system. After getting an overview, developers consolidate these initial models, get more user input, and then design user interfaces.

This book, written in a clear, informal style without excessive jargon, reads very much like a book on business motivation. Various practitioners of Contextual Design offer short testimonials on the software design method.

The Kindle edition is laden with typos and editing errors. Looks like they converted an early draft rather than something that'd been copy-edited. The content is good; but it'd be nice if the obvious errors weren't so distracting.

explains the customer's role in product design

Contextual Design explains the customer's role in product design to high-tech product teams. It gives techniques and procedures on how to integrate customers (and potential customers) into the development cycle. The most important section for product managers is the chapter on techniques for interviewing (called "Contextual Inquiry" in the book's lexicon) details how to conduct an onsite interview, what to watch for, and which follow-up questions to ask. While geared to the systems analyst, the book is valuable to anyone responsible for gathering prospect problems at an onsite meeting.
