Knocked this one out of the park!!
By Peter Haight
This is an incredible coffee table book based on the Alien and Prometheus saga of films and an absolute must-have. It is a handsomely bound hardcover at just under 170 pages. The outside cover is textured with tiny embossed Weyland-Yutani emblems and has a small slipcover that reaches around the spine to the back. The presentation of the book is absolutely breathtaking. As an Alien fanatic, this is a real treat and a true gem that belongs in any collector's library. We rarely get anything this cool and unique. It is presented as being in-universe, written as if somebody from Weyland-Yutani were to read it. It is filled with little goodies, cutaways, foldouts, and neat material.

The premise of the WY Report is that after the events in Alien Resurrection, the company puts together a file of its research backlog regarding the xenomorph, and its relation to the Weyland Corporation (later Weyland-Yutani,) Ripley, and further still, the United Systems Military. To play catch up, the Weyland Corp was founded by Peter Weyland in 2012, Weyland Corp merges with cybernetics rival Yutani in 2099, giving birth to WY as we know it. Nearly 100 years later, the USM is formed, and nearly 250 years later, megacorporations are officially banned, causing Weyland-Yutani to fold. The USM is phased out after the Auriga crashes into planet Earth during the final act of Resurrection, thus giving birth to Weyland-Yutani once more. This is the lead-up to the book.

Inside the book are numerous sections, that give a very thorough look into the lore and mythos of the Alien saga. It starts with a timeline, detailing the 2000s up to the 2400s chronologically. Next, there is a section detailing the original Big Chap Alien, codenamed XX121. Its basic life cycle stages are detailed over the course of a few pages. It explains about the Nostromo crew's encounter with the creature, from Kane's attack, to Ash's observations of the facehugger, continuing further to the chestburster, and finally ending with the Drone. The artwork is awesome!! You can tell it's digital but it is very high quality.

There is also a section regarding the Queen early on, where WY scientists list their speculations and theories about its life, purpose, hierarchy, etc.

The next section concerns "the proud history of Weyland-Yutani," and is aptly-named. It details the formation of the Weyland Corporation in 2012, to its later merger with competitor Yutani in 2099, to everything inbetween. In this section, we learn about David's creation and his legacy for other WY-produced androids, or as the book refers to them as, "artificial persons." We also learn about Call, an artificial person, where after an off-world revolt, escapes a purge where "her" kind were retired in a scheme similar to 1982's "Blade Runner." In this section, we are also educated on WY's great technological feats, such as atmospheric processing, cryostasis, faster-than-light tech, medpods, amongst other items.

Continuing further, the next section details the journey of the USCSS Prometheus, to the planetoid LV-223. Crew profiles are listed, the ship itself is broken down and specs are listed, and we get a good look at the Juggernaut ship, piloted by Engineers. There is little information about the Engineers themselves, and some information is "redacted." The redacted parts of the book are holographic and change colors and patterns when you look at them differently. Also in this section, we learn about the black goo, or the "Accelerant," that infects Fifield, and eventually, Dr. Holloway. The creatures encountered on LV-223 get their own pages of info.

The next section follows suit and focuses on the USCSS Nostromo and its fateful trip to LV-426 after its crew awaken from stasis on WY company orders. We get some handsome artwork of the vessel itself, and full crew biographies. We also learn about Special Order 937, and WY's regret towards the LV-426 excursion, where they claim "we would have sent a team of 120-A2's," hinting that a team of androids like Ash would have fared better in retrieving a full, unharmed specimen. In this same section we also learn about the quarantine breach initiated by Ash, and going further on, learn about Ripley and her legacy.

The next two sections concern the following two films in the Alien series, namely, Aliens, and Alien3. They are all packed with similar diagrams, cutaways, and technical info. The section about Alien 3 has an excerpt of the book "Space Beast" written in-universe by Robert Morse, the only surviving prisoner from Fury 161. There's also a tongue-in-cheek joke about "Vincent," the faceless prisoner referenced in lore but never shown.

The last two chapters are about Alien Resurrection and the universe post-A:R. Technical, medical, and scientific benefits of harvesting the xenomorph specimens are shown, and present an interesting look at what could be, were WY to get their evil way.

It ends on a hopeful note-- the company is still hoping to harvest an intact xenomorph and reap its powers. This book is an introspective of the franchise, and while some may find this book "too much" to dive into, it presents a tiny window into our favourite film universe, as if we lived in it, and had access to this insider info.

I give this book 5/5 stars, and I wish I could rate it more. It is truly an awesome book, especially considering the price. From its sturdy, handsome bind, to its unique and deep look at the Alien saga, Insight Editions knocked this out of the park!

I am a host of Perfect Organism, a podcast about the Alien saga. We can be found on Podbean and Facebook! I give this book my blazing recommendation and approval. Passing up on this book is a huge mistake!

"Maybe we can build a fire, sing a couple of songs!”
By Thwip!
As a young adult I saw Alien at the theaters in 1979 and was blown away by the gritty working–class representation of space travel and the incredibly unique & hideous life cycle of the creature. It gave new meaning to the phrase being “bitten by the bug” and this interest would carry me through the rest of the films and many more graphic novels & mass market paperbacks. When I first saw this new hardcover and read some of the contrasting reviews, I thought, probably more rehashed material, we all know how these companies love to repackage, I’ll wait till the price comes down. Then last past week I began reading the “The Rage War” novels – which after one book are excellent – and my Alien/Predator obsession got the best of me.

Yes, this book can be repetitive, and as with “coffee table” style releases it is lavishly illustrated often at the expense of informative prose, but if you are a friend of the franchise(s) this book is really a fun experience. Note: The wiki website “Xenopedia” has some interesting additional details regarding this Amazon listing as well as the $uper $piffy $culpted $lipcase Collector Edition.

** Xenopedia states: “In-universe, the report is said to have been written several months after the USM Auriga crashes into Earth, before the Weyland-Yutani Corporation returns as a serious global power (as described in the novel Alien: Sea of Sorrows).”

This places this internal report’s publication shortly after the events of “Alien Resurrection”, which conveniently explains why so many Alien stories are constructed around a tired formula of explorers blundering into mass slaughter completely ignorant of their adversary. (Grr!) The book is longer than the advertised 160 pages, without numbering I’ll say add another eight, and it begins with a stark warning as to the security levels required to read its findings and the legal consequences for those who are in violation. The book is then divided into 10 chapters:

006 … Company Statement of Interest
008 … Company Time Line
010 … Xenomorph XX121–Basic Life Cycle
033 … The Proud History of Weyland–Yutani
043 … Genesis (*Events depicted in Prometheus*)
065 … Encounter On LV–426 (*Alien*)
083 … Incursion at Hadley’s Hope (*Aliens*)
126 … Encounter on Fiorina 161 (*Alien3*)
143 … The Fall of The USM Auriga (*Alien Resurrection*)
157 … A New Beginning (*A dozen pages considering possible medical, military & science applications*)

Though not containing all the fancy “bells & whistles” as the Collector’s Edition – I.E. A replica of Carter J. Burke's communication card – there are still a few attached goodies;

* Classified copy of “Lambert’s Incident Statement Regarding Quarantine Protocol Deviation”
* A four–panel gatefold external diagram of the Sulaco
* Copy of the post–mortem “Report on Marachuk, John J., ID#93850”
* Copy of transmission from Carter J. Burke to Weyland–Yutani suggesting a means of alien acquisition
* Transcript of CPL. Hick’s Final Status Report
* Copy of “Space Beast” by Robert Morse. (*Xenopedia says this 8–page booklet was “written in 2183 by Robert Morse, the sole survivor of the Xenomorph incident at the Fiorina "Fury" 161Class C Work Correctional Unit, about his experiences there. Due to its sensitive nature, the book was banned.”)
* Debriefing of Security Officer Y. Bose. Assigned to USM Auriga in 2380

Final Thoughts: I enjoyed this book, and yes it is often repetitive, but for me it’s not about what is repeated, it’s the new details embedded within. The book totally ignores the AVP franchise, but makes subtle references to the novels Alien: Out of the Shadows & Alien: River of Pain, and the video game Alien: Isolation. I’ve never played this video game, but those three MMPB were entertaining, and so far, the new “Rage War” is busting with new narrative.

Reporting the Awesomeness of this book!
By Flit Asuno
Yes this book is full of surprises. First off, let me just say SPOILERS! Let me just say that the timeline of events actually surprised me the most. If anyone here are fans of Alien Isolation, then good news. Amanda Ripley's adventures from that game was referenced in the timeline of events. Making that game canon to the films. The other thing that gave me the big surprise was the year 2219 AD in the timeline of events in this book. Here's why! The company(Weyland-Yutani) sent the ships "Geryon" and "Kadmos" to LV-223 in the year 2219 AD but contact was terminated. The reason why I'm surprised by this is because this book is referencing the events that happened in the Fire and Stone Comic. What is Fire and Stone you ask? Its a Comic Crossover Franchise Event that involves the franchises Prometheus, Aliens, AVP and Predator. In the Comic Prometheus Fire and Stone, it shows the ships Geryon and Kadmos on a mission to LV-223 led by Captain Angela Foster in the year 2219 AD. Okay that's enough spoilers. If you want to know about Fire and Stone, just buy the book Prometheus the Complete Fire and Stone Hardcover. Its available here on Amazon. I highly recommend reading that book. This book also mentioned names and places from novels. An example of this is LV-178. Which was featured in the novel Alien out of the shadows. Captain Brackett from Aliens River Of Pain was also mentioned in this book. This makes those novels canon to the films. What is not mentioned in this book are the events of the AVP Films and the game Aliens Colonial Marines. To be fair, the AVP Films was canon to the Alien Films. But those Films are contradicted by Ridley Scott's Prometheus Film and the timeline of events mentioned in this book. The director(Paul Anderson) of the first AVP Film mentioned in the making of AVP that after Charles Bishop Weyland's death, his company Weyland Industries was taken over by Yutani Corporation in modern times. This would mean Ms Yutani in AVPR was the head of Weyland-Yutani Corporation in modern times. This is however contradicted by the Films Prometheus since the movie shows that Weyland Corporation hasn't merged yet with Yutani Corporation. And Prometheus takes place on LV-223 in the year 2093 AD. This book further contradicts this by saying Weyland Corporation merged Yutani Corporation in the year 2099 AD. Lets also mentioned the Fire and Stone Comic Event seeing Dark Horse Comics also doesn't consider the AVP Films canon with their current comics of Alien, Prometheus, Predator and AVP. Bottomline AVP is non canon to the Alien Films. As for Aliens Colonial Marines being non canon to the Alien Films, lets just say non of the events in that game was mentioned in this book. So its also non canon to the Alien Films. Thank You 20th Century Fox for making things right. I can go on and on telling what I read in this book. But that would be revealing way too much. So I'll stop the review right here. I have no regrets buying this book. If this book however becomes non canon, so what? To me this was still a fun read and I highly recommend this book. This deserves a 5 out of 5.

In the early 1990s, members of the Origami Tanteidan Convention in Japan began a unique competition devoted to insects and other arthropods as, over a period of years, artists attempted to one-up each other, successively adding legs, antennae, wings, and more. Each year, the models became increasingly complex, as origami enthusiasts from around the world joined the fray. Beetles became winged beetles. Winged beetles became winged spotted beetles, and so on. Models went from 30 or 40 steps to hundreds of steps. As a result, origami artists developed a range of design techniques that ultimately changed the entire art of origami folding. Bugs continue today to be a favorite subject for origami artists, and this book both describes the original challenges that stretched the art and also includes 12 original contemporary bugs (including one master-level project) designed by some of the most talented origami artists today from around the world - with detailed step-by-step instructions to make them.

Origami Masters: Bugs Additional Info
By Shuki Kato
Okay, this is weird, I'm reviewing a book which has a few of my own contributions within, is that allowed? Mainly I wanted to disclose a bit more of the contents within the book than was mentioned in Amazon's description. This book has a very brief overview of the history of modern origami (all of 5 pages), a couple pages of symbols and terms and then goes straight into the 12 insect projects. After that there's a short section of full-page crease patterns for just 5 of the models (the ones by Ku, myself, and Lang). There are a couple of intermediate/high intermediate models, but the vast majority are complex and above, so the book is not suitable for beginners. Finally, the diagrams are colored to mostly match the folded subjects and there are multiple color photos of each model.

Here's a list of the models and their assigned step count:

- Won Park
1. Flapping $ Butterfly - 29 steps
2. $ Dragonfly - 29 steps

- Sebastian Arellano
3. Bed Bug - 49 steps
4. Praying Mantis - 85 steps

- Marc Kirshenbaum
5. Mosquito - 65 steps (also diagrammed in Kirschenbaum's "Origami Bugs")
6. Ladybug - 125 steps (also diagrammed in "Origami Bugs")

- Dan Robinson
7. Leaf Insect - 91 steps

- Jason Ku
8. Rhinoceros Beetle - 137 steps
9. Luna Moth - 201 steps

- Shuki Kato
10. Titan Beetle - 144 steps
11. Flying Hercules Beetle- 181 steps

- Robert Lang
12. Yellow Jacket - 75 steps (condensed folding sequence of a very complex model)

A serious challenge!
By R. Sherwood
This is the Origami book to get for somebody who is very good at the art already, or somebody who is very smug and overconfident in their skills, and you want to really challenge them. It does cover the history of origami, and the "bug wars," but only briefly, and therefore is much more of a teaching origami book than a history piece or reading book on the topic.

By and large, I found that these directions were very clear, well illustrated, and allowed me to complete models far more difficult than I ever thought I could when I was simply skimming the book before attempting. Even the easiest models in this Origami Masters book were equal to the hardest ones I had ever done before. However, I personally had trouble with certain steps in certain models. I always find steps that say “collapse the model difficult to do, and therefore could not finish the praying mantis. I couldn't do the lady bug after I was told to “repeat steps on the other side,” because somehow I just can't mentally make that jump sometimes. I never know what the directions mean when I am told to “stretch” some part of a model, and therefore couldn't do the rhino beetle.

I will admit I am somewhere between a beginner and intermediate folder, and I have never seen more difficult origami, or models with more steps than these. The shortest amount of time I spent on any of these was 30 min, the longest was over 3 hours. The models that I completed were beautiful, except for my mosquito, which I thought looked like a Lovecraft horror because I didn't follow the leg folding directions properly, and because it was designed to have a much shorter proboscis than a real mosquito has. None of the last four were doable for me. They all looked amazing, of course. It took me 40 min to get to step 21 in one of the last four models, where I made a fatal mistake, and feared to continue on to steps the creator called “not for the faint of heart.” Several of these models in the second half of the book included a note from the creators that these took anywhere from 5-7 hours. For me, I could only imagine how long it would have taken, had I been able to do them.

Not For The Beginner
By Matt Harnick
I've been doing origami for more than 40 years and spent part of that time as Co-Editor for the Origami USA Publications Committee evaluating models and accompanying diagrams for the annual convention book. I have also met most of the creators represented in this book and can honestly say that they are some of the most prolific and accomplished creators in the art.
The Bug Wars is remembered as an instigator of discovery of new techniques and gave rise to a whole new generation of ingenius folders and their designs. It was the birth of ultra-complex folding. In the United States, it was really two artists who started the trend of making models which were anatomically correct: Dr. Robert Lang and John Montroll. Montroll made the first breakthrough with his innovative Insect Base. This took things only so far. Dr. Lang improved on this and his results can be seen in his first collection of invertebrates "Origami Insects And Their Kin" which included a pill-bug and a ladybug with spots. until this book, the best insect designs in my opinion were to be found in the collections "Origami Insects I and II" which are only available as Japanese imports. It kept going from there and today there are hundreds of designs for insects which are incredibly realistic.
This book is the latest offering of lifelike origami insects. What must be understood is that most of these models are not just complex but fall under the heading of ultra-complex. Not only to they entail some extremely tough techniques, but they must be attempted from very large, extremely thing and strong paper (which can be obtained from Paper Circle's O-gami Store but is expensive at $15 per sheet and you must be prepared to cut it into squares yourself). Commercially available origami paper, such as Kami, is usually too thick, does not hold creases well enough and is probably too small to use (10 inches is the minimum and even this is small when working with designs like these). This should not stop the avid origamian (an old term for an origami artist which seems to be out of use) from at least practicing the early steps to familiarize him or herself with the techniques. These are not run-of-the-mill models and though they may have some classic folds, many are relatively new and will only be familiar to the intermediate or advanced folder.
One thing to note is that age is not a factor really in choosing this book. As long as a child shows patience and the manual dexterity to perform intricate folds (and believe me I've seen six-year-olds who could fold Dr. Lang's earlier insects very well) this book should be considered as a challenging addition to their pursuit. For some people, this kind of challenge is a lot of fun.
One word of caution. Very few people can fold Dr. Langs more recent designs anywhere near as neatly as he does. The reason for this is that he has access to and makes full use of an industrial laser to pre-score the crease-pattern into the paper - look closely and you can see the perforations on the example photographed for the book. This is not cheating especially since there is no real cutting involved. After all, he not only invented the origami designs, he invented the laser too!
The diagrams are very well done. It's always hard to show a 3-dimensional proceedure in a 2-dimensional medium. And there is no better teacher than experience. Note that there are often How-To videos on YouTube to help with similar models (though I'm not sure that any of these are covered yet).
If you do decide to get this book, good luck and happy folding!

DELICIOUSLY SWEET AND COMPLETELY CAPTIVATING !!!
By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis
Found: Mate of the Cave Bear, The Dualis Book One
Oh My! Harmony Raines has done it again! And just what has she done, you ask? She has published an amazing new serial called The Dualis. Yes, I said serial which means multiple books and dare I say it - cliffhangers! Yikes! But don't despair folks! Although the serial does consist of three separate installments, fortunately for us, Raines released all three on the same day! Woohoo - no waiting! I settled in and decided to read all three in one sitting so I'm writing only one review for the entire series and will post it for each book. Never fear, there will be NO spoilers! Harmony Raines has always exhibited exceptional talent and imagination in her writing but in this series, she has far exceeded my expectation of her skill in creating something new, fresh and original that encompasses not one genre, but several. She has skillfully combined paranormal romance with science fiction and fantasy to create a fascinating and intriguing world of the past and future, filled to the brim with action, adventure, suspense, love and hope. The story is original, exciting, suspenseful, thrilling, heartbreaking, heartwarming, sweet, romantic and sensual. These are only a few of the words that came to mind while I was reading this story. The dialogue is clean, smart and flows well. The characters are intriguing, captivating and engaging. This is a romance and does include some sex scenes, however, they don't overpopulate the book. Raines has dared to venture outside the box with this story and I love it! Now, let's talk about the basics of the story itself.
The premise of the story:
It is now the twenty second century and through the use of research and technology, scientists have learned how to manipulate and alter human DNA. For too many years, children have been genetically engineered by doctors and scientists allowing parents to choose eye color, body type and even gender. These developments have contaminated the gene pool and brought evolution to a halt. The world is now in desperate need of new blood, or rather uncontaminated blood from the past with new stem cells.
Now for the plot of the story:
Tworn Corporation has developed a time machine which can create a worm hole enabling a person to travel through the time. It is their intention to send a young woman 30,000 years into the past to find a primitive man, become pregnant with his child and then return through the wormhole by means of a tether, to the future. Her child would be used for the benefit of mankind and become the savior of the world. Huh? No pressure - right? Jenna is chosen to be that woman because she met several vital and important requirements. She has no fillings in her teeth, he's never had any broken bones or surgical procedures and most importantly, she's a virgin meaning she nor her DNA has ever been tainted by a male from her time. She considers herself to be unattractive and unremarkable. Obviously Tworn Corporation agrees and believes there is absolutely nothing to distinguish her as being from the twenty second century. Although some may see this opportunity as a great honor, Jenna is not doing this for recognition nor the advancement of mankind. She's simply doing it for the money. Now don't start thinking badly of Jenna just yet. She wants the money for purely unselfish motives - her mother became terminally ill and as a result, Jenna inherited the astronomical debt for the medical bills after her mother's death. She's from a very poor family and could never live long enough to pay off the debt, so here she is, about to travel back in time. She's given six months of training to prepare her for her journey but Jenna soon suspects there is much more to this mission than Mr. Trimble with Tworn Corporation is telling her but she has no idea what it could be. She begins to have her doubts but fears for her safety if she doesn't complete her mission. But they never prepare her for the entry into the land of the past and I mean that quite literally because she tumbles from the wormhole high above the ground with nothing to help to break her fall. She plummets into a heavily forested area and is seriously injured. She is found by Haran who is a Dualis, a primitive, a "cave bear", who reluctantly and begrudgingly nurses her back to health. This is how Haran refers to himself - a cave bear, a Dualis, meaning of two natures, man and beast. Haran is a primitive bear shifter and lives alone in a cave. After the heartbreaking loss of his parents at a young age, he has chosen to be alone and never take a mate. But Haran soon discovers that fate can never be denied. The attraction he feels for the strange young woman proves to be too strong to resist and he quickly falls in love with the beautiful, curvaceous Masu that falls from the sky. She should be his enemy, not his mate. Huh? He only kills for food but the Masu hunt and kill for the pleasure they draw from cruelty and fear. She is Masu and not to be trusted! Nope, never going to happen - he will resist! He will??? Jenna has no clue that she looks like the Masu, his enemy. Heck, she doesn't even know who they are but one thing she does know, she's incredibly attracted to Haran and she wants him - in her arms and in her bed, or should I say her furs. Jenna now realizes that quite possibly, she may never want to give up her child if she becomes pregnant nor return to her own time! What? Will Jenna survive her injuries? Will she become pregnant? Will she ever return to her time? Can Haran protect her from his enemies? Or will Haran perish in his fight with the Masu? Are there other shifters in this time and if so, where are they and will they help? Oh my! No spoilers here but I will say this......Beautiful, virtuous heroine-check! Sexy, primitive but intelligent bear shifter-check! Large cast of fascinating characters including other types of shifters-check! Oops! Uh-oh! I may have just let a little spoiler slip out! Danger, drama, suspense, action, heinous enemies and evil machinations-check! Heated attraction, sweet romance, heartbreaking angst and some heartwarming, arousing sex-you bet! That and a whole lot more!
Execution of the story:
My personal opinion - Well done! I'm not a science/tech geek so I don't require a detailed scientific or technical explanation on how the time travel was actually accomplished, but I was totally captivated by the true essence and message of this story - love can prevail. Remember folks, this is fiction and fantasy, so keep an open mind. If you want to try something original and a little different yet quite refreshing, then this is the book for you. Deliciously sweet, completely captivating and delightfully entertaining!

Cave Bear
By Racycarr
Jeanna who was this curvy girl had agreed to go back in time and let a cave man get her pregnant an donate it to science. As the time grew close she wonder if she could really do it but found out there was no backing out.

Haran who was this Neanderthal bear shifter was surprised that his true mate had appeared. This was truly one thing he did not want. Now he will have to claim his mate and take care of her and the baby they will have.

Jeanna never thought she would fall in love. She never dreamed she would met a bear shifter. She hope to never go back to the future. There is danger around the corner and sacrifice that must be made.

Loved this story!!
By Bobbi
This story is simply fantastic. Such an original storyline with great characters including our very loving and happy couple, Jenna and Haran. I intended to read just this part of the story, but had to read all three because I just had to know. I won't give away more than the description reveals, but this is so far removed from the average shifter story, you will all love it!! I also feel a series coming from this too, because of a certain black panther.

Amazon.com Review
Until now, the Unified Modeling Language (UML) has been primarily used to design software, but should you use it to model your entire business as well? That's the intriguing argument of Business Modeling with UML, a text that combines leading-edge enhancements to UML with some solid thinking about business. Written for any manager with some technical background, this book looks at the possibilities of UML used to model entire organizations.

The book makes a strong case for the advantages of modeling businesses in UML. With models, an organization can provide better software, define and implement new goals, and even decide whether to outsource certain operations. The Erickson-Penker Business Extensions for UML, invented by the authors and presented within the text, permit UML to document the entire business enterprise. This book shows how to model businesses, from business architecture to processes, business rules, and goals. Short case studies--for Web-centric and more traditional companies--are used to illustrate key concepts here.

Later sections of the book will perhaps take a little more background in software engineering to appreciate fully as the book presents a handful of business patterns, which offer reusable solutions to common problems (just like software patterns). The authors also look at how to leverage a business model to create better software.

In engineering, a new car is modeled and thoroughly tested on a computer before any physical prototype is ever built. As the authors point out, a business that has accurate models can test out new ideas cheaply and then adapt to changing market conditions quickly. This title makes a case that UML--a tool traditionally used by software developers--is ready to tackle the job. Read this notably informative and intelligent book to see the possible benefits of business modeling in UML for your organization. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Business modeling basics, UML notation and Erickson-Penker Business Extensions, class diagrams and powertypes, object diagrams, statecharts, activity diagrams and swimlanes, sequence and collaboration diagrams, collaboration and use case diagrams, component and deployment diagrams, stereotypes, business architectures, business processes, resources, goals, business rules, Object Constraint Language (OCL) and collections, business views and patterns, business goal allocation, business goal decomposition, business goal-problem, and software architectures

A very good guide to business-level modelling with UML
By Andrew Johnston
One of the weaknesses of the Unified Modelling Language is its relatively limited support for modelling at the Enterprise level, especially to accurately model business processes. The UML purists believe that everything should be reduced to Use Cases, while these authors recognise that much more is necessary.
The book covers five quite distinct topics:
1. An introduction to business modelling and UML, explaining the problems the authors want to help solve, and describing each of the relevant techniques of UML,
2. A proposal for a group of extensions to UML (using that language's own established extensibility mechanisms) so that that it can better model business processes,
3. A description of the variety of views and models which will be required to establish a comprehensive understanding of the business, or at least part of it,
4. A repository of "business patterns", which you can use to model the business,
5. A comprehensive worked example.
Each of these is quite detailed. In particular, the book contains probably the best introduction to the Object Constraint Language (OCL), and its use to model business rules, that I have read anywhere. The sections on how to do business modelling are also very good, as are the introductions to the relevant UML techniques.
The "Eriksson-Penker extensions for business modelling" are important because several UML-based case tools have now implemented them as an emerging standard for business process modelling with UML. If you want to fully understand how these work, this is the book to read.
The business patterns are more of a "curates egg". Some are extremely useful, and others innovative which could easily solve your problems where there is an accurate match. That said, some are less good and seem to state the obvious, although with patterns it is always difficult to know if you are judging some harshly simply because you are so familiar with them and other readers will get more value. Some of the pattern explanations are a bit repetitive, and the "examples" often sound very artificial, but overall they are useful, and a single one which solves a real business modelling problem for you will justify the rest.
At over 400 pages, some of which is occasionally slightly slow and ponderous this is not an ideal book to read from cover to cover. But it is definitely one to study, focusing on whichever topic is most relevant to you at any time, and I can happily recommend it.

Interesting concept, great work on business modeling
By Jc
Sometime ago I have been wondering if somebody will try to bridge the gap between business modeling (the one used by consultants) and software engineering. It would certainly make it easier for people to understand and explain business operations.
This book is an application of the UML into the realm of business modeling. It is very good in the sense that it explains and goes through the patterns that form business models. The introduction on UML is pretty short and concise, so if you are new to it try using "Applying UML..." book to get an introduction. Be prepared to sit down and spend some time reading, since the material can be a little bit daunting to try to understand and remember all the patterns available. Overall, I wish I had this book for Systems Analysis instead of the outdated software engineering books that we used.

Good for new business modellers
By A Customer
Being relatively new to business modelling in the eCommerce arena, I purchased this book with the aim of guiding me to a consistent diagramatical notation/methodology for functional requirements. Whilst many customers are still more comfortable with the old flow chart and DFD, I was able to at least apply some of the principles behind the notation. I showed someone else in our workshop sessions and they took the details so they could purchase their own copy. I have compared notes with a few others and find that they either have the book or have at least seen it. I would recommend this to someone in the same situation as I was - relatively new to business modelling, yet not naive wrt analysis and design methodologies. For those who are old hands it might still be worth a look.
