Strong start, weak middle, lousy end

A summary: Princess Kristina learns about the extinct dodo when Caroline Platzer reads Alice in Wonderland to her. Kristina is no dummy and realizes that just because it was extinct when the book was written doesn't mean it's extinct yet, and a quick check shows that they have thirty years before the last reported sighting of a dodo. Caroline contacts Pam Miller, Grantville's resident bird watcher, on the princess's behalf. Will Pam lead an expedition to the far flung island of Mauritius in order to save the dodo? Not only does she, but she also brings along her two best friends - downtimers Gerbald and Dore. Princess Kristina funds a four-ship expedition. The trip down is fine, but when they arrive, a French warship is waiting for them. Their military escort sacrifices itself, and Pam's ship, the Redbird, flees. The two colonist ships' fates are unknown.

Pam, her friends, and the crew wash up, shipwrecked. The captain is presumed to have gone down with his ship. The remaining souls turn to Pam for leadership. There's a great deal of problem solving as they set up a permanent camp. Pam eventually finds her dodos, not to mention an island filled with diverse, non-extinct flora and fauna. Their escape comes in the form of a Chinese junk in the hands of Middle Eastern pirates. Pam the birdwatcher hatches scheme after scheme and suckers most of the pirates off the boat, ambushes the rest of the pirates on the boat, and takes over the ship. Some minor characters are killed in battle.

They take the ship around to the bay where the French ship lurked and discover that their enemy is not a French naval vessel, but French marauders, possibly sent by Richilieu or Monsieur Gaston (this point is never clarified). The military escort and the colony ships have been taken, and their populations imprisoned and enslaved. With Pam dictating strategy and tactics, they take out the pirate crew and capture the captain. The prisoners and slaves are freed. The previously lost captain of the Redbird is among them. There is much partying. Then, Pam goes for a hike by herself without her gun, and - surprising no one - is kidnapped by an overlooked group of pirates who refuse to rape or kill her but instead hit her on the head with a rock and then drag her off around the countryside. Her friends track the kidnappers and eventually catch up with them, but not before Pam kills three of the four while recovering from a closed head injury, finding a lost Dutch colony, and being unanimously elected leader by them. There is more partying followed by sexy time with the captain of the Redbird.

The book ends with a handful of chapters that amount to an amputated "everyone lived happily ever after, and Pam was the most super cool awesome fantastic lady ever".

I wanted to like this book. I really, really wanted to like this book. I noticed going in that there were occasional errors that a proofreader would have caught. Then I started seeing habits a good editor would have squashed. And then, around the midway point, the quality of writing dropped precipitously. It dropped to the level of bad fanfic. Internal thoughts skipped from character to character in the same paragraph. Exclamation points were gratuitously used. Characters get a full paragraph introducing them again in each chapter. Telling takes up far more of the story than showing. Informed attributes crop up all over the place. The action scenes are not well thought out, and the consequences are not followed to their logical ends. (You don't interrogate the pirate captain because you're cranky after the fight, so you have him imprisoned in a bamboo outhouse for three days, and you're SURPRISED that he escapes? Really?)

What I resented most was the failure to develop the protagonist in a successful manner. She's a 45 year old divorcee lab technician with a strained relationship with her son and a hobby many people think is peculiar, lame, and obsessive (no offense, birdwatchers). She is rife with opportunities to experience internal conflict, to fail, to doubt, to worry, and to grow. All we get is a cardboard Mary Sue loved by every single person on the face of the planet except the bad guys. Sailors with decades of life on the sea give her command of the ship. Blooded soldiers with death in their pockets ask her to plan every ambush, attack, siege, and rescue. The colonists happily accept her appointment as governor even with a dozen better qualified candidates.

If I had a chance to talk to the author, Mr. Vance, I'd advise him to do hire an editor and proofreader out of pocket, and to rewrite the entire second half of the book.

High School students SHOULD read this book!

First off, the way the Crucible relates to the post-war era and the 1950 McCarthy trials make it a prime choice of reading material for high school students. As a high school student myself, I found the book very interesting as a psychoanalysis of human nature. Arthur Miller has explored the concepts of guilt and hypocrisy in a very unique fashion.
The theme of how a repressed society reacts to hysteria is perused in this drama. My personal belief is that people who entrust their lives to unproven dogma find themselves trapped in a form of repression. This includes the conservative outlook posted by the former reviewer of this book.
Lies, hypocrisy, and lust are themes that teenagers begin to encounter in high school. To refuse them the liberty to have complete access to literature is to lock down the developing, free and independent thinking mind. Thus, the banning and removal of books deemed "inappropiate" by biased standards results in the formation of a repressed society much like the Puritans in the early 1600's.
Ignorance may be bliss for you, but don't punish others because of your biased, uproven religious dogma. Our society will succeed if the next generation is given a chance to use their BRAINS. Our society will fail if the conservative coalition destroys independent thinking.
Conformism is your enemy.

This is not a book that HS students should have to read.

The reason that I say high school students should not be required to read this is becuase of the profanity the cheating and the lying which the book is based on. This was a very trying time in are history but are kids should not have to be subject to reading this kind of material. Is there not another way of teaching this?

A British coroner slammed it as being 'a misguided effort to solve the crime'. Regardless, a British court was unable to prevent his extradition and, despite never having been questioned by police and publicly protesting his innocence, Andrew was thrown into a Greek prison with hardened criminals. He spent almost a year awaiting trial in truly horrific conditions, encountering violence, drugs, racism and rioting - the most extreme of which he witnessed in the infamous Korydallos Prison. ln 2011, Andrew was acquitted as the Greek police's case unravelled. Following his acquittal in 2011 he returned to London and his family, to complete his studies and campaign for a change in the law concerning the EAW. This is his first book. And chances are good that once readers accept Fox's hard-hitting yet commonsense approaches, they'll accept his sales process, which applies, by the way, to selling widgets, promoting intangible services, or selling yourself. Every one of the author's 50 two-page to four-page chapters contains just one nugget of information more than the preceding section, enough to keep the momentum and the attention. A sad story about the hazards of drinking coffee (it spilled--and the prospect was then distracted by a second crisis) is followed by a notice not to eat a major meal during a sales lunch, which is promptly followed by "no pen in the shirt pocket" advice. Prior to starting Fox & Co. Jeffrey J. Fox worked in senior positions for three high powered consumer and industrial marketing companies. He was Vice President , Marketing, and a Corporate Vice President of Loctite Corp, now Henkel/Loctite. He was Director of Marketing for the wine divisions of The Pillsbury Co. He was the Director of New Products for Heublein, Inc, now Diageo. (All three companies became clients of Fox & Co.) Jeffrey is the winner of Sales & Marketing Management magazine's "Outstanding Marketer Award;" winner of the American Marketing Association's "Outstanding Marketer in Connecticut;" and the National Distributors Association's award as the nation's "Best Industrial Marketer." He is the subject of a Harvard Business School case study that is rated one of the top 100 case studies, and which is thought to be the most widely taught marketing case in the world. His books have been published in 35 languages. His offices are in Chester, Connecticut.

There are rainmakers and there are rainmakers. There are rainmakers operating at the senior level of management who make deals involving acquisitions and mergers entailing tens and hundreds of millions of dollars in company assets, and there are rainmakers who deal on the retail level who call on small, medium and large companies trying to make a sale. This book is about the latter. These are the salespeople who knock on doors for a living, who need that bonus check to make ends meet, who operate under the old adage, If you don’t sell you don’t eat.

When I was in retail we were taught the five steps to making a sale: (1) greet the customer (2) determine the need, (3) discuss benefits, (4) overcome objections, and (5) ask for the order. Simple, effective, artless. The really good salespeople, however--the 20 percent of the sales force that generated 80 percent of the business--worked hard and mastered the art of selling. And that’s at the heart of this book: mastering the art of selling. And it is an art, as surely as the Van Gogh hanging in the museum—a joy to behold.

I like this book for many reasons, but I like it mainly because the author, Jeffrey J. Fox, keeps it simple. Effective selling, the kind that can turn a business around, is hard work but it’s not complicated. Fox walks you through what it takes to succeed. Among the points I particularly liked: (1) customers are people too; treat each customer as you would treat yourself; (2) prepare: 90 percent of all sales calls are won or lost before the salesperson sees the customer; (3) selling is problem-solving: show how your product will make them more money; (4) it’s not about lunch; it’s about getting the customer’s commitment, getting the bill, and getting on to the next appointment; (5) salespeople welcome objections because they know objections are simply the way customers express their desires; (6) be nice to everyone; business can come from unexpected places; (7) never knock the competition: to do so is to impugn the intelligence of the customer; (8) return calls ASAP—rainmakers are not too big, too important, or too busy for anyone; (9) your job is to listen to your customer: turn off smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices before you meet with a customer, and (10) don’t talk with food in your mouth; bad manners are off-putting: they signal insensitivity to others, an overly self-interested person, and an incomplete education. Be a model of decorum: acquire good table manners.

I knew people, good people, educated people who, for a variety of reasons, wound up in sales and didn’t like it. They either failed or barely eked out a living, forever dissatisfied with their lot in life. Why? Because they felt selling was beneath them. All the good sales people I knew, educated or not, were not proud. They worked hard, mastered the art of selling, and lived full, dignified, and satisfied lives.

I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend, read it the afternoon it arrived, and now have reordered five copies to give to my grandchildren as they graduate from college. It is the best description of how to be successful in any type of activity that I have ever read. Whether it is a for profit business, a local charity or even in getting things accomplished at your church, you can benefit from this short book. Every organization needs a "rainmaker" ... not just to sell your product but to focus the entire effort on one goal. The book is organized in 2 and 3 page chapters or examples making it an easy read ... plus it is fun. No wonder it is considered one of the top 100 business books of all time. We hope to get Mr. Fox here for a meeting to share some of his success stories for our local community college. Ken Jones
