This book was required for my Intro to Computer Information Systems class, and I felt it does a good job covering the basics about what is important in technology today. For me, these types of subjects are better covered with hands on experience, so there were plenty of places where the text can be a bit boring, so I made sure to take plenty of notes in order to be able to pass the exams. This is a good place to start if you are looking to pursue a tech related career.

Thank you Amazon!
By Pheonyx
Technology In Action, Complete (6th Edition)I had trouble purchasing this book at the campus bookstore because my campus did not have it in stock. I purchased this book on BN and they sent me the wrong edition. I had to return it, and re-purchase it. Then, the day I was suppose to receive it, I get an email stating that my order was cancelled due to them not carrying it in stock! I was so PO'd! I logged into Amazon, purchased the book I needed (cheaper) and i had it in my hands THE NEXT DAY! I am so thrilled! I was already 4 days behind on my classwork due to all the screw-ups... I cant thank you enough! :)

About the actual text: I am enjoying this textbook. It is well written and comes with a CD as an extra resource. All chapters have a Chapter Summary and Key Terms and where to locate them in the text. Also, for practice, each chapter has a real-world scenario with fill in the blanks using buzzwords and vocabulary, a self-test in both multiple choice and true/false formats, a "making the transition" section, and critical thinking questions. Overall- 2 thumbs up!

A very good book to read.
By Anwar El-Issa
This book is an excellent source for novice readers. It has answered all my questions about technology, and it can put you on the right track and provides you with a solid background about technology in general. I consider it an indispensable necessity for most novice readers. The presentation and the layout of the book is excellent and user friendly. Quite often I want to get answers for many questions. However, some readers may find it overwhelming due to the amount of information in it, but it is an excellent source lo get you educated in technology. It has given me some kind of confidence.

A Scholastic Miscallany: Anselm to Ockham
By Rusty
A very thought provoking book. The writings of Anselm especially moved me as he argued the case for God and how He is alive working in this world. A true treat as you look into the minds of early Christians scholars in the 12th and 13th century.

Essential material
By Doug Erlandson
This anthology, originally compiled in the 1950s by Eugene Fairweather, contains many of the most important primary-source documents from the philosophers and theologians of the middle ages. Anselm's writings alone warrant approximately 150 pages. In addition, shorter excerpts from Eadmer, Ivo of Chartres, Gratian, Abelard, Hugh of St. Victor, Richard of St. Victor, Peter Lombard, Stephen Langton, Bonaventure, Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham, among others, are included. I was initially perplexed as to why Aquinas was missing from this number, until I discovered that his writings are collected in a separate volume. So, someone looking for a collection of all the essential writings of the Middle Ages will also want to purchase Volume XI of this series (The Library of Christian Classics). Otherwise, the collection is one of the best at bringing under one cover the most important writings from approximately 1000-1400 AD in Western Europe.

Motive Necessary
By Timothy.Bohrer
As this book is a collection of previous works, the presentation is objective, which I deem necessary. I would recommend it to anyone looking to read the classics. I used it for a research paper on Anselm's Cur Deus Homo. I am now contemplating buying the rest of this series simply for fulfilling my desire to read all this series contains. The series itself is a marvelous collection of works that every serious reader of Christianity should own. Therefore, if you do not already own them all, purchase this series immediately and set to studying it. It can only help you, your church, and all who come in contact with you or your church.

Couldn't put the book down!
By anat kremen
Sharp Shooter has all of the great elements of action, love story, humor, danger and interpersonal relationships all rolled into one book. It was so captivating that I read the entire book in three days. I felt a great connection to the characters and was able to visualize each and every environment and ever changing landscape that the author so eloquently detailed. The love story is what surprised me the most because the author manages to inject this beautiful theme within the dark and dangerous world of the sharp shooter; which kept me on the edge of my seat. I hope that there is a sequel coming!

Awesome!
By Violet
I am a voracious reader and have read many books by a variety of authors but I have to admit that when an author creates a story where it leaves a “footprint” on our hearts then I feel compelled to give this author a review. There is nothing like the feeling of being part of the characters and feel their connection. Ms. Murray has a very creative style! If this suspenseful story is the author's first book, I look forward to many more of Ms. Murray's stories.

Gripping novel
By sue4rab
After reading the reviews, I was not too sure what to expect.

To my great surprise and pleasure, this is one of those that I could not put down.

Was there too much sex? Definitely, no.
Was it unbelievable that a person could only realize she is gay in her twenties? Definitely, not.

Two equally strong likeable gorgeous women. Great story line and writing.
How I wish more novels are up to this standard.

Prologue

“Mother?”

The snow swirls around her, and she stands with her back to me, her body enveloped in a bright red cloak. Crimson . . . Mihaela’s color. The queen who once ruled the Dragomirs looks like a splash of blood against the expanse of white, and yet she is as strong and substantial as the jagged Carpathian rocks that rise out of the lonely Romanian mountain where we always meet.

I step toward her, not understanding. Why doesn’t she turn to greet me? “Mother?”

And then Mihaela Dragomir does turn, her face obscured by the cloak. And in her hands she holds an object, something she presses against her chest the way a nun would cradle a cross. But Mihaela is no humble, pious sister, and that thing . . . It is no holy relic.

The stake . . . The bloodstained stake . . .

Lucius’s stake, which he used to destroy his uncle—and which he’d once nearly used to—

“No! Never!”

Thrashing, fighting off something that seemed to press against my chest, I struggled to sit up and opened my eyes to see firelight flickering against stone, and for a second I wasn’t sure where I was.

Gradually, though, my surroundings sank in. I was in Lucius’s home—our home. In our bed. That pressure on my chest . . . it wasn’t . . . it was just the heavy blankets that we always needed in his—our—huge, chilly bedroom, even though a fire burned in the fireplace.

Taking a deep breath, I stretched out my arm and rested my hand on his shoulder, reassuring myself that everything was okay. As long as Lucius was with me, I’d be okay.

Still, images from the nightmare came rushing back.

The stake, which I hadn’t seen since the night Lucius pressed his fangs against my throat and recreated me as a vampire . . .

Why had I dreamed about it? And why had my birth mother—who would never harm me—been holding it?

I’d started dreaming about Mihaela back in Pennsylvania, and those dreams had become more frequent since I married Lucius and moved to Romania. It was like my mother, destroyed shortly after my birth, was trying to protect me as I tried hard to follow in her footsteps and become a ruler, relying on a journal she’d left for me for help. A posthumous wedding gift to guide me as I learned to be a princess.

My heart started beating faster again. Was I learning? I was trying . . .

Wriggling back down under the blankets, I moved toward Lucius in the massive bed—in which, as he’d once confessed, he’d probably been expected by the Vladescu Elders to take my life, conveniently removing his Dragomir bride from power and allowing the Vladescus to have unchallenged dominion over both our families. I kicked at the covers, sort of swimming through them, suddenly impatient to be right next to him.

Everything in his home—our home—seemed so big sometimes. Including the burdens.

Lucius slept on his side, facing away from me, and I pressed myself close to his back, feeling the coolness of his body. I shared that coolness, too, since he’d bitten me, sealing our fate and a decades-old pact that had decreed our marriage in the interest of stopping a war between our rival families. Pressing tighter against my husband—how weird that still sounded—I listened to his steady breathing, which always calmed me down when I got nervous. Lucius wasn’t scared. He thrived on ruling the clans. That was what he’d been born and raised to do.

Or did he worry sometimes?

“Lucius?” I got up on one elbow and shook him gently, needing to see his dark eyes and hear his deep, reassuring voice. “Lucius?”

“Yes . . . yes?” he mumbled. He rolled onto his back and fumbled for me under the covers, which were expensive and stiff and made me miss the soft, worn-in flannel sheets on my bed in Pennsylvania. But how could a princess ask for flannel? “Yes, Jessica . . . ?”

Resting my hand on his chest, I felt it rise and fall so slowly that I wondered if he had already fallen back asleep. But I couldn’t help asking in a whisper, so the guards outside our door wouldn’t hear, “What does it mean if a vampire dreams about a stake?”

Lucius didn’t answer, and I realized he was definitely sleeping—probably exhausted from yet another day of struggling to unite our obstinate families—so I lay back down and nestled against him again. In response to the pressure of my body, he turned and pulled me close, so I could feel the entire length of his powerful warrior’s body against mine, like a shield at my back.

High on top of that Romanian mountain, in the heart of a confusing castle that I supposedly governed but where I still got lost in the twisted corridors, the night got very still. Even the crackling fire seemed to get quieter. After a few minutes of forcing myself to forget about the nightmare, I started to drift off to sleep again, when suddenly Lucius muttered, barely whispering, his breath chilly against my neck, “Betrayal.”

I stiffened in his arms. Was he answering my question or caught up in his own dreams? His own nightmares?

Even if it was the latter, that wasn’t exactly comforting. Did my husband have disloyalty—treachery—on his mind? And Lucius, like all vampires, put great stock in dreams . . .

“Betrayal.” I said the word out loud, trying to make sure it was even what I’d heard him say. “Betrayal.”

At the sound of my voice, which was soft but audible enough to break the profound mountaintop silence, Lucius, seeming to get restless, wrapped his strong, scarred arm tighter around me, so I was trapped against his chest.

I took his hand and tugged to give myself some space to breathe. He didn’t let go, though, and I tried to move him again. Against my fingertips, I could feel another deep scar—an X on his palm that marked him as mine, cut into his flesh at our marriage ceremony—and his wedding band on his left hand. His dominant hand. The one he’d used to wield the stake when he’d held me in a very different way, in that same castle, not too many months before.

Chapter 1
Antanasia

Of all the grim chambers in the Vladescu castle—not counting the subterranean dungeons, of course—the one that served as a courtroom had to be the worst.

Like every other room aboveground, this one had a fireplace with a blazing fire, but the flames seemed more hellish than cheerful. They cast scary, shifting shadows on the gray rock walls and definitely didn’t do much to warm up the stark dcor, which consisted of a semicircle of benches for witnesses, a worn spot on the stone floor where the accused would stand, and a long table, where I sat next to Lucius in a hard, straight-backed chair. The Elders waited in similar seats on either side of us, all of the ten older vampires sitting remarkably still.

Shifting in my chair, I tried—and failed—to get more comfortable.

I should sue the people who designed the My Little Pony Crystal Rainbow Castle I played with in kindergarten. They led me to believe that castles were filled with rainbows and cupcakes and pastel-pink furniture. Not stone and fire and . . . blood.

Turning a little bit sideways, I tried to meet Lucius’s eyes, but he was staring straight ahead, obviously preoccupied. He was also very still, except for his left hand, which absently rubbed his jaw right where he had a small scar. I knew that meant he was hiding tension, and the butterflies in my stomach got worse.

If Lucius is tense, how can I even imagine handling this?

My husband seemed to sense that I was getting very nervous, and he shifted his eyes just long enough to remind me, “Don’t freak out, Jess. We’ve talked about this. It’s part of our duties.”

Well, Lucius had never used the phrase “freak out,” but we had discussed how my new responsibilities included handing down justice, and sometimes sentences of—

“Let the accused come forward.”

I jumped as Lucius’s commanding baritone suddenly echoed off the walls, and turned with a sinking heart to see that we had been joined by a vampire who stood at the back of the room, hands shackled and head hanging low.

He’s a killer, I reminded myself as my mouth got dry. A bunch of witnesses saw him destroy my uncle Constantin Dragomir. And what I’m doing is just like serving on a jury. Regular humans do that all the time!

I glanced to my left, seeking reassurance that I wouldn’t be alone in deciding the fate of the prisoner who was shuffling toward that pale spot on the floor. But my uncle Dorin—the only Elder I considered an ally—wasn’t there, and I ended up meeting the gaze of Claudiu Vladescu, who smirked. Maybe at the growing panic that must have been apparent on my face—or maybe at the prospect of hearing testimony about a murder.

My stomach got queasier. Claudiu’s just like his older brother, Vasile—another evil, vicious vampire, whom Lucius destroyed.

Although I knew I was squirming way too much for a princess, I turned to watch Lucius again, just as he said, in a steady voice that I couldn’t imagine summoning if I had to speak, “Tell your story to this panel, Dumitru Vladescu, and we will decide if you deserve mercy—or punishment.”

I should have given my full attention to the vampire who was about to fight for his life, but I kept watching my husband, who had stood on that circle himself just months before and fortunately been found not guilty of Vasile’s death. Luckily, the majority of the Elders—not counting Claudiu, of course—had believed that Vasile attacked first, giving Lucius no choice but to defend himself.

I never let myself think about what could have happened at that trial, and was glad I hadn’t even known about it until long after the verdict had been handed down.

I continued studying Lucius. How can he even bear to be in this room, let alone coolly direct everything? And if today’s verdict is guilty, won’t he have to . . . ?

“Speak,” Lucius urged his relative. “This is your chance to save your existence.”

I heard both command and compassion in Lucius’s order, but my cold blood suddenly felt like ice. An existence might really end today. I’m not just part of a jury. I’m the judge, and Lucius might be . . .

Fingers gripping my chair, I finally forced myself to face Dumitru Vladescu, who raised his head, so I could see his dark, terrified eyes, because if he was found guilty . . .

“No!”

I wasn’t even sure I’d cried out loud, but the squeal of my chair as I jumped up probably drowned out my voice anyway. “Excuse me,” I mumbled, bowing my head. “I . . . I need to leave. I don’t feel well . . .”

I couldn’t look at Lucius as I stumbled from his side. And I certainly didn’t look at Claudiu or the other Elders, who would be all too aware of why the American girl raised by vegans was rushing out of the room, nearly tripping over her long formal dress.

“Excuse me.” The Elders pulled in their chairs so I could pass behind them. “Sorry . . .”

I knew that I was—again—hurting Lucius’s and my chance of winning a crucial vote of confidence later that year, when the most influential Vladescu and Dragomir clan members would convene at a big summer congress of vampires. A vote that could elevate Lucius and me to king and queen. Yet I couldn’t stay there, even if leaving doomed us to failure.

I practically ran past the prisoner, not looking at him, either. But as I hurried toward the door, I did catch the eye of one vampire I hadn’t noticed before, even though I should have expected her to attend the trial of her father’s killer. My cousin Ylenia Dragomir, eighteen, like me, small and wearing black, sat alone in a corner, blending into the shadows as if she didn’t want anyone to see her face while she heard the story of her dad’s murder recounted in detail.

I wasn’t sure what the verdict on the prisoner would be, but I had never felt so guilty as when I left that room, letting down not just my husband, but the first friend I’d made in Romania.

Chapter 2
Antanasia

“Don’t be so hard on yourself, Antanasia,” my uncle Dorin urged. He hovered near my desk, twisting his hands nervously, sympathy in his eyes. “I . . . I didn’t make a very strong effort to attend the trial, either. Sitting in judgment—it’s not for everyone, you know?”

“Claudiu seemed okay with it,” I noted miserably. “And Lucius was fine!”

At least, he’d acted fine, which was what really counted.

“Yes, well, Vladescus are legendary for their sang-froid,” Dorin reminded me. “They all have ice in their veins. And a few, like Claudiu, salivate to mete out some punishment. We Dragomirs, on the other hand, tend to be a little . . .” He couldn’t find the right word, but I could finish the sentence easily enough.

Soft. Meek. Cowardly?

But was it so bad to want to avoid ending lives?

I pushed myself upright in my huge office chair, which had once belonged to my birth mom. The silk nightgown I’d changed into—in a desperate attempt to make everyone believe I really was ill—kept making my butt slip off the leather seat, and when I shoved back, my feet dangled, so I felt even more like a kid playing at being a princess. A shamed kid.

At least one Dragomir—Mihaela—never shied away from a trial.

Have I gone too far, with the pajamas?

“I guess there’s nothing I can do now except try to redeem myself at tomorrow’s meeting with the Elders,” I said, looking glumly at a huge ledger that was open on my desk. “I can at least try to make a few intelligent points when we discuss this budget.”

Yet I didn’t have much hope for that, either, as I scanned columns of numbers that supposedly represented how much Lucius and I intended to spend to govern a shifting, borderless, crazy kingdom of vampires I hadn’t even known existed until recently.

I slumped in my seat, thinking, Sure, I’m a mathlete, but I’m also a teenager who just last year worked for three-dollar tips, not millions of euros in taxes!

And who even knew vampires collected taxes?

“Dorin?” I closed the ledger with a thud, because my worried, distracted mind kept skipping ahead to an even bigger meeting that would take place later that year, making it impossible to focus on numbers. “What is the vampire congress really like, anyhow? I have trouble picturing this event where Lucius’s and my fate will be decided.”

“Oh, goodness . . .” Dorin stepped back and wrung his hands again, but this time he seemed happy and nostalgic about a week that I dreaded. “The congress is quite an event! The most prominent Vladescus and Dragomirs gather from all over the world, and while business is conducted, of course, it’s also a chance for us to socialize. Parties every evening for a full week, with the best food and music. In the past, the estates have been decorated beautifully enough to rival your wedding!”

His eyes practically glowed, and I wished that I could get excited about the prospect of hundreds of my relatives wandering around the castle. “So it’s basically an oversized undead family reunion?”

“Yes.” Dorin nodded. “It has been held each year since the pact that decreed your marriage was signed, uniting our clans. And this year will be extra special, as we celebrate the lasting peace achieved at your wedding.” He smiled even more warmly. “Your mother hosted the very first congress, shortly before her destruction. She would be so proud to see you take over that role.”

I slipped on the seat again and pushed myself back up.

How would I feed and entertain eight hundred vampires when I couldn’t even order dinner from the kitchen for Lucius and me? I would mess up the whole event, and my relatives would all laugh as they cast their “no” ballots in the vote of confidence on the last day. I was doomed to bomb at my own party, and ruin Lucius’s future, too.

“It’s going to be a disaster,” I admitted out loud, for the first time.

“Antanasia!” I looked up to see Dorin pressing a finger to his lips, shushing me and nodding toward the door.

I knew immediately that I’d made yet another mistake. Emilian, the young guard who was always posted just outside the room whenever Lucius couldn’t be with me, was never supposed to hear me complain or show weakness. Servants—even loyal ones—were notorious gossips, according to my husband, who’d dealt with “underlings” his whole life, while I’d been mucking out stalls on a no-kill farm.

If Emilian told anyone I was predicting disaster at the congress, word would spread like wildfire that I couldn’t even handle planning a party.

Dorin and I looked at each other, both of us probably thinking the same thing. That the only thing I did royally was mess up.

How is Lucius doing at the trial without my support?

And is my cousin Ylenia, whom I also abandoned, crying behind her thick glasses?

“Let’s get back to the budget,” I sighed, opening the ledger again and speaking more quietly. “I think I’m translating the Romanian wrong, because it seems to me that Lucius wants to spend sixty-five thousand euros on rabbits next year.”

“I do have a taste for hare—but I could never consume more than fifty thousand euros’ worth in one twelve-month span.”

I froze at the unexpected sound of a deep masculine voice and sensed my uncle seizing up, too, as we both swiveled to see Lucius leaning against the door frame, arms crossed.

And although he’d just made a joke, his face looked troubled, maybe because I’d admitted my ignorance too loudly after all, or maybe because of what he’d just done at the trial . . .

“Lucius?”

From Booklist
While Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side (2009) was a lighthearted vampire rom com, this sequel focuses more on action. Eighteen-year-old Jess Packwood, ne vampire princess Antanasia Dragomir, is now living in Romania with her husband, Lucius. They try to bring new ways to the vampire court, but when Lucius is accused of murdering his rival, Jess is left to navigate vampire politics with the aid of his surfer vampire cousin and her best friend, Mindy. The feminist element from the first book is missing here, but Fantaskey’s grasp of teen obsessions and realistic dialogue will keep readers satisfied. Grades 8-12. --Debbie Carton

Loved it just as much as the first book!
By Amanda Welling
First Impressions: I adored Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side and I was screaming with joy when I found out I would be able to review this sequel! The first book was one of my favorites of the year when it was released and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. I love the cover art on both books, too! I actually didn't realize there was going to be a second book until I was creeping around on the author's website one day and BINGO! There it was! I'll even admit I was a little scared to read this book because so often the sequels are never quite as good as the original.

First 50 Pages: One of the first things that I noticed with this book is that it was immediately much darker and less teenagerish then the first book. In the first book, there was so fluff and I couldn't really find that in this book. Everything is much more serious this time around. It's in Jessica's hands to save her husband from his execution, so there was a level of suspense right from the start which I really enjoyed. A woman that has to save a man? That's a big change from other books with similar plot lines! I love strong, dependable female characters!

Plot and Characters: There are alternating Point of Views in this book between Jessica and Mindy, a feature that I really enjoy, but not everyone will. As for the plot, Jessica has to be able to stand on her own two feet and adjust to live as a ruler of vampires. In the first novel, as the reader we are left with many unanswered questions and this book fills in those gaps. Once again, Jessica does a complete transformation throughout this book that I just loved reading about.

There were a few differences that I noticed between this book and the first. For one, there isn't as much romance as the first book. I'm okay with that, even though the romance in the first was one of my favorite things. There is a good explanation why the romance was sizzled down, since you know, it is really hard to have romance when one character is imprisoned for a good part of the book. When you do find the romance, it's electric! You know how people say that with time, the heart yearns more? That's a pretty good way of describing it. I love the romance between Jessica and Lucius, although I'll admit, it is rather odd to find a married couple in a young adult novel!

It was also really nice to hear more from Mindy and Raniero in this book. Their POV's were also added into the mix, and while I didn't care too much for Mindy in the first book, I actually liked her character in this one. They are more of a side plot then an actual part of the storyline but I don't think that they detracted me in any way from the main storyline. I enjoyed their parts on this book and their romance made up the slight lack of romance between the main characters. I thought they were very interesting!

Final Thoughts: This book didn't disappoint me at all. It is on par with the first novel and I may have even liked it a bit more because of its darker themes. It felt like an exchange. While the first book was loaded with romance, it didn't have much suspense and action. While the second book doesn't have a ton of romance, it makes up for it with suspense and action. I think Beth did a great job with this book and I can't wait until I see what she comes up with next!

Eh, this could have been so much better!
By Kindle Customer
This could have been so, so much better if the story had a different focus!

There is a reason why romance novels end with a wedding, sometimes followed by a few pages of honeymoon shmexing (don't expect it in "Jessica Rules the Dark Side," it's a very young YA novel). When the lovers are bound together for eternity, when there are no more misunderstandings and tension, how do you continue writing about this couple and keep things hot and dynamic between them? Only a few authors can pull off a relationship that is as exiting post marriage as it was during the dating phase. Unfortunately, Beth Fantaskey is not one of those authors.

As you probably remember, "Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side" ended with Jessica turning vamp and then marrying Lucius in a series of extras posted on Beth Fantaskey's website. So, they have their HEA, what is next?

Next is a conflict related to some conspiracy to keep Lucius from his rightful throne and Jessica's problems with accepting her new royal status. The whole affair is pretty tepid and frigid, if you ask me. The mystery is very one-dimensional, with hardly any suspense. And the hotness of Jessica/Lucius antagonistic flirting is, as expected, gone.

What lightens up this otherwise dull and slightly angsty sequel is a secondary romance between Jessica's best friend from Pennsylvania Mindy and Lucius' cousin Raniero, delivered via 2 additional POVs. Their story should have been the focus of the followup to Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side.

Although Mindy sounds surprisingly hick-ish in this novel, Raniero compensates for her deficiencies with his amusing Buddhist/hobo/surfer attitude. These two have chemistry, they provide comedic relief, they are interesting. Jessica's and Lucius's problems should have been secondary to Mindy/Raniero romance.

I wish someone had given Fantaskey the advise to write a companion novel about Mindy and Raniero rather than a direct sequel to "Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side." But alas, nobody did. Very unfortunate indeed. Give this book a go only if you are willing to be bored and skim over all Lucius/Jessica parts to get to more enjoyable Mindy/Raniero scenes. At least this was much better than "Jekel Loves Hyde."

Lots of character growth makes a nice ending!
By Lili's Reflections
I bought Jessica #1 the day it came out and to this day it is one of the most lovingly used books on my bookshelf. So I finally picked up book number two with Steph's inadvertent prompting, and I'm really happy I did!

Fantaskey moves us to Romania where there truly is no concept of safety. Jessica is doing her best to prove to Lucius that she can be a Princess, but she's having trouble abandoning her American and vegan routes for a lifestyle of brutality and blood-lust when it comes to being vampire loyalty. She's barely eating and has begun to hallucinate and have frightful dreams from the stress. And then the unthinkable happens. Claudiu is murdered and everyone points their fingers at Lucius. With her husband's trial date inching closer and closer, Jessica is forced to solve the murder mystery before she may have to carry out her first vampire destruction...that of her husband.

I did enjoy the mystery in this one. We were able to slowly watch Jessica bloom into a Princess with confidence instead of a scared girl that doesn't feel like she belongs. While I had the murderer pegged about half way through the book, Fantaskey made sure the tale was entertaining and full of twists and turns that I didn't fully expect. Jessica enlists the help of Lucius's most trusted ally, an ex-master assassin that turned to Buddhism and surfing to qualm his extreme bloodlust, and takes us on a really interesting journey of discovery.

The characterization in this novel is what made it for me, though. It's told between four alternate point of view's: Jessica, Lucius, Mindy, and Raniero, affectionately referred to as Ronnie by Mindy. At first, I thought that this would be really confusing, but Fantaskey handled her unique writing style beautifully and used the alternating views to her advantage by slipping us every possible detail and hunch that she could. Lucius's speech, as always, provided a lot of comic relief, but Raniero's speech was ten times funnier despite his eventual seriousness. Mindy also played a large part in comic relief. Fantaskey wrote her specific chapters in a special voice that not only made you laugh, but had you feeling the intense protection that Mindy felt for her best friend despite the fact that she suddenly became a vampire princess. It was also really nice to witness exactly how Jessica transformed from the shy, questionable Princess to a vampire with so much confidence she practically already looked like a Queen.

All in all, this was a really great installment in Jessica's story. The ending was satisfying, though it did leave me with a few questions. It makes me curious about whether there will be a Jessica #3 on the horizon. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a light, funny vampire tale that does stand out from many of the rest. However, you must read Jessica #1 and I recommend reading the wedding novella before reading this one. The novella truly helps to bridge the gaps between the two stories better. Jessica's story is truly one of pure entertainment.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—On their first mission for the Portland County Search and Rescue team, Alexis, Nick, and Ruby don't find the missing man with autism they were looking for; instead they find the dead body of a young girl. Now these three teens from very different backgrounds must work together to find the killer. Complicating the issue is Alexis's mentally ill mother, who disappears after a paranoid episode, Nick's crushing feelings of inadequacy, and Ruby's struggles to find a place she belongs. Will they be able to find common ground with one another before the killer strikes again, maybe even at one of their own? Henry realistically portrays these three kids thrust into a real-life horror. Their doubts and fears, as well as their strengths, all ring true and teens will be able to identify with one of the protagonists. The adult characters, especially Alexis's mother, are also fully developed, albeit a bit slow on the uptake in the case of Ruby's parents. The actual mystery is not that intriguing, but a pervading sense of threat and danger is present throughout. Give this series opener to fans of character-driven mysteries.—Erik Knapp, Davis Library, Plano, TX

Highly Recommended
By E. Simon
I have followed April Henry's novels since the first charming title, "Circles of Confusion." She has developed considerable polish and professionalism over her many writing outputs. I thoroughly enjoyed this title. The subject matter was common enough--serial killing of young women--but the novel was unique in several ways. The characters are primarily teens who participate in the Search and Rescue teams serving the greater Portland area. Each of the teens portrayed is facing her or his own problems, and these are presented with understanding and compassion. They approach their challenges proactively and with some insight to their own motivations and drives. The novel also guides us to challenge our own prejudices about homeless people and the difficulties they face subsisting in an urban environment. I found the book easy to read and understand but not simple in its subject matter or execution. I recommend it highly.

I always like a mystery where one learns a new aspect of police work and in this case the story involves teens assisting in doing some of the legwork for Portland, Oregon police after during a training session for young volunteers, two teens stumble on a the body of a young woman. Step by step you experience what a group of three teens,a boy and two girls, go through helping in the investigation.

In 2009, Ray and his son planted Celebration Church in the Nashville area.

Understanding The Power Of God-Given Imagination
By VicG
Ray McCollum in his new book, “The Power Of God-Given Imagination” published by Whitaker House brings us Releasing the Power Within You to Transform the World Around You.

From the back cover: God has already given you the power to create your own future…you just need to learn how to use it.

The Power of God–Given Imagination is about awakening the dreamer within you. It demystifies the power of imagination and shows how we all instinctively use this power without realizing it. It shows how faith and prayer cannot operate without imagination.

Author Ray McCollum also debunks the false notion that the power of the mind, the imagination, and dreaming takes one into New Age mysticism or the secular realm of “positive thinking.” The power of the human mind belongs to the church, and God expects us to use it.

Within the pages of this book, you will discover exactly what this power is, how it works, and how you can use it to both transform your personal life and transform the culture around you by releasing the kingdom of God.

Someone sees the potential in you, sits down with you and tells you the truth that you can do such and so a thing: writing books, starting a company, flying planes. At the time that you are told that you can do this activity you are not however you believe this person is telling you the truth. Now the imagination in your mind kicks into high gear and you imagine the books or the company or whatever and then it happens. It started out with the truth that you could do a thing, you believed that truth, then you imagined what it would be like doing that thing and then, lo and behold, it winds up you doing it all because you imagined it. It is the same way with The Father. He has told us The Truth in His Word. All it takes is us to believe what He is telling us and then use our God-given imagination to make what He has said happen. That is the whole purpose of the book– to help us see what The Father has been telling us, believe what we have been told and then use this new foundation to accomplish what we have been gifted to do to change the world around us. I recommend it highly! I recommend it as a gift for friends and family so that they can find their purpose as well.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Whitaker House. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

Mixed messages on creating a new world around us
By Joan N.
We have been created with a basic instinct to imagine, McCollum writes. We envision a better world. While not everyone can change a nation, we can change the world around us he says. This book is about discovering the power within to dream, to imagine, and to change the world around us.

McCollum helps readers discover what that power is. Based on Gen. 11:6 he writes, “God Himself says that there is enough power in our human imagination to make all things possible.” (33) We create the reality in our mind first (first creation), then in the physical world (second creation). He notes that there will be real problems during the process and that we must maintain hope.

He ends his book with seven practical disciplines to activate God-given imagination. They include taking an honest look at your life, learning to practice the presence of God, get in touch with your true identity in Christ, and four more. These are disciplines that will definitely take some time to cultivate.

I felt that there were some mixed messages in this book. “The circumstances that you see around you have been created by the images within yourself,” he writes. (38) But then he has “the presupposition that life is difficult because we are living in a sinful world.” (56) So do we create our external circumstances or are they part of living in a sinful world?

I felt another mixed message was one about prayer. If we have ever had an answer to prayer, receiving what we prayed for, “Your prayer created the future,” he says. (79) But then he goes on to write about prayer “requests.” So, did my prayer create the imagined answer or did God in His sovereignty do so?

McCollum writes, “When we create things, we fulfill God's will for our lives.” (50) If it were only that simple. I Thess. 4:3ff reminds us that God's will for us is much more than just creating. It involves sanctification, sexual purity, bodily discipline, and not taking advantage of another Christian.

Sometimes McCollum makes grand statements. For example, when writing about inner transformation, he says, “Transformation is no more difficult than simply looking at yourself in a mirror. But it has to be the right mirror,” he adds, noting that it must be the mirror of God's Word. Ah, if it were only that easy. His statement is based on 2 Cor. 3:18 but I have read books entirely devoted to that verse and the necessity of renewing one's mind, surrendering to the work of the Holy Spirit, etc.

McCollum tells us that we can change the world around us. But he also writes, “The truth is that there certainly are things coming our way that are out of our control.” (76) He writes, “Yet God invites us to be 'co-creators' of the future through prayer.” (79) So do we create the future or is it under God's sovereign control?

There is some good teaching in this book. I really appreciated his writing on our self-image and how that determines our outer behavior. I also appreciated his reminding us that our motives need to be right when using our God-given imagination to create. I appreciated him reminding us that we need to pray according to God's will.

That last issue, reminding us to pray according to God's will, recognizes God's sovereign role in our “creating.” I do wish there had been more emphasis on God's plan for our future and less on our own.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through The Book Club Network for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

Imagination Yielded to God
By Amazon Customer
Review Title: Imagination Yielded to God (review of The Power of God-Given Imagination by Ray McCollum)
Reviewer: Janice S. Garey
***** 5 Stars

The author, Ray McCollum, explains about the origination of ideas in the mind as being the "first creation." The implementation of those ideas is the "second creation." Never is a known creation without the two steps to becoming a made thing. I have never considered this before. I appreciated the author's insights to help me understand that if a person is open to hearing from God at the "first creation" level in the mind, that miracles can result based on yielding to God's ideas (aligned with His word).

Many secular books have addressed the attitude of if you can dream it then you can make it happen. The author, early on before becoming a Christian, found this type of book to be inspiring and motivating. But later he realized God was not included in those books, and that the imagining could be used for evil causes.

I am thankful for the examples given of when people align their desires and their dreams with God's word. You will want to read of the resulting miracles documented. You will feel hopeful about what God can do with and through you.

The book addresses the cessationist point of view that the Holy Spirit is no longer active with signs and wonders in this modern age. It offers scriptural references to support the author's conclusions. This discussion in the book will enlighten those unfamiliar with the doctrine and how it has affected many modern churches.

I am thankful to the author, publisher, and bookfun.org for giving me this wonderful book in exchange for an honest review. Christians worldwide need to read and act based on the information in this positive book. You, Christian, can be inspired to let God into your "first creation" process to be a part of His kingdom building plans for "on earth as it is in heaven."
