better than I expected.

I've had bad experiences with this author, but was pleasantly surprised this go round. There were a handful of errors that could have been edited easily and the ending felt rushed. Overall, I did enjoy the story.

Her voice of reason

This was a boring story, which cost more than it was worth. Elizabeth and Darcy never appeared to connect until the end of the story. Elizabeth was a petulant child and Darcy was wanted gratuitous sex without any feelings. The story did not flow and I must have missed the plot-did she really have a voice of reason-she appeared clueless. Darcy accuses her of an affair with little provocation. This appeared to be a conglomeration of her other books-I will take a little of this and little that from my books and make a short story. This was a great disappointment! Would the Elizabeth we know write to a doctor in London and describe her father's symptoms and based on this ridiculous diagnosis decides to marry Darcy?? Then she decides that she is the injured party.

I different telling of our beloved couple.

One of her best P and P variations. I've read over 400 titles and all of this authors books. I really enjoyed this version as it was different than many of those previously enjoyed. Elizabeth literally hates Darcy but marries him out of necessity. After many of the trials and tribulations that our beloved couple frequently experiences they come to know and love each other. It is the getting there that seems unique in this version and I enjoyed it very much.

A great introduction to positive parenting practice

This was a really good book that provides a great introduction to positive, respectful parenting theories and techniques. After reading several other books on this topic, I don't think this book was the best though. If I had read this book first, I may have given it a better rating. But after reading several books on this topic, I just don't think it's worth a 4 or 5 star review for me personally. There were good things and bad things about this book that influenced my reason for this "just okay" rating.

The Good:
I like that this book is not written by an “expert”. The author is simply a mom that read a bunch a books from experts and put them into practice and figured out what worked best for her family.

The author's style of writing makes it really easy to read and follow. It can be difficult to read some parenting books by “experts” that go into so much technical detail that it makes it feel like you're studying a collage textbook on child behavioral psychology and neurology, or they go off on long case studies and stories to demonstrate a point. This book offers very straightforward and to the point advice that is nicely layed out in numbered and bulleted lists with the major points being displayed in bold text in the paragraph. It was also a very quick read. I easily read this book in 2 days.

I found every piece of advice in this book to be excellent! I've read dozens of parenting books but this is the first one I've read that I actually agreed with 100% of the book. I have a few favorite books that I love and recommend to anyone who asks for a recommendation. But even with those books there were always a few things I didn't quite agree with. Not this one though. I feel like this book was so spot on I could have written it myself.

The not so good:
You're probably wondering, with all the wonderful things I have say about the book, how can I possibly give it 3 stars instead of 5? The reason I didn't give this book 5 stars was because it's doesn't offer anything new. While I think the author does an excellent job of pulling out the best ideas from various experts and summarizing their work, that's really all this book is is a summary of significantly more helpful books. Having already read all the books that this author has read, I could almost pick out which book each piece of advice came from. The problem is that she doesn't go into nearly enough detail on most subjects. The author attempts to cover so many topics that every chapter in this book could have been an entire book in itself. For example, in chapter 2 the author talks about writing down your childhood story to help explore how those experiences have shaped the way we parent and effect our thought patterns today and how to change them by re-writing our stories. This was basically just a summary of Siegel's book Parenting from the Inside Out that covered this topic in much more depth. She also pulls from Siegel's book The Whole Brained Child when she talks about the upstairs brain vs. the downstairs brain and the “lizard brain” without going into the detail needed to fully explain these complex topics.

In conclusion:
If you've already read Dr. Siegels books: Parenting from the Inside Out, The Whole Brained Child and/or No-Drama Discipline, Janet Lansbury's No Bad Kids, and Markham's book Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids can probably pass on this book because you won't get anything new from it. If you haven't read these books, I would recommend passing on this book anyway and just reading those instead because you will get much more in depth coverage on several important concepts. If you don't have the time to read all those book or you would just like an introduction into positive parenting to see if it's for you, then this would be a really great option for you. This book is defiantly an excellent starting point. However, if you read this book and you like it, I would recommend also reading some of these other books to expend on the ideas introduced in this book. If you only have time to read one other book though, I would highly recommend No-Drama Discipline: The Whole-Brain Way to Calm the Chaos and Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind. Also, if you're like me and you want to practice positive parenting but you struggle with self-control and getting too emotional while you discipline, I would also recommend the book:Mindful Discipline: A Loving Approach to Setting Limits and Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child. I think this book will do a much better job of helping you to gain self-control by introducing you to the practice of mindfulness. As the author of Positive Parenting explains, you can't discipline your child until you learn to discipline yourself first. This is so true but if that is something that you really struggle with, as I think many parents do, I don't think this book will be enough to help you with that.

A must-read for new parents who want to connect with their children from the start

I was introduced to positive parenting principles and to Rebecca Eanes's amazing books in an unusual way. I teach restoratively justice, and I had become accustomed to outlining for my students the differences between the kinds of questions that traditional criminal justice asks when a crime is committed (Whose fault is it? What did they do? How can we punish them?) and those posed by restorative justice (What happened? Why did it happen? How can we make things right?); yet it never occurred to me that applying what I knew about the "blame game" and the "pain game" to parenting would be a smart move. While I was pregnant with my twins, I showed my students a TEDx talk with Katy Hutchison in which she describes her family's use of a time-in rather than a time-out (and explains how she wanted that same kind of time-in with her daughter's killer). For some reason, that video clip really resonated with me, as did her explanation that putting a child in time-out only alienates and isolates them - it fails to address whatever underlying need all parties concerned may have. I start reading up on the subject and came across The Newbie's Guide to Positive Parenting by Rebecca Eanes, then her Facebook community, Positive Parenting: Toddlers and Beyond, and now Positive Parenting: An Essential Guide (her most recent book).

Reminiscent of Pam Leo's Connection Parenting and L. R. Knost's The Gentle Parent but packed full of practical tips and ideas, Rebecca's book is indeed an essential guide to understanding why children behave the way that they do, and how we as parents can change our focus from controlling and punishing them to cultivating the kind of connected, secure relationship with them that will nurture them and help them reach their full potential. The book encourages readers to work on their own in order to identify triggers and concerns before putting these into action, and this self-reflection and heightened self-awareness results in much deeper, more meaningful family connections. My own parenting has benefited tremendously from exposure to this paradigm shift - I consciously treat my children with respect and empathy and find that I have more patience and a greater sense of calm in negotiating situations where we disagree. I'm indescribably grateful for Rebecca's willingness to share her expertise and experience, and I feel confident and assured in the knowledge that her book is making me a better, more mindful parent with each read.

Must buy!

This is a great book! I recommend it for every parent. I love that it begins with working on ourselves, as we cannot improve as parents, if we have not improved our own bad habits. Learning to retrain my brain from everything I learned growing up in a home where yelling was the way to express anger, and get your point across. Love this book!

Diagnosed at age nine with Ewing's sarcoma, a cancer that severely disfigured her face, Grealy lost half her jaw, recovered after two and half years of chemotherapy and radiation, then underwent plastic surgery over the next 20 years to reconstruct her jaw. This harrowing, lyrical autobiographical memoir, which grew out of an award-winning article published in Harper's in 1993, is a striking meditation on the distorting effects of our culture's preoccupation with physical beauty. Extremely self-conscious and shy, Grealy endured insults and ostracism as a teenager in Spring Valley, N.Y. At Sarah Lawrence College in the mid-1980s, she discovered poetry as a vehicle for her pent-up emotions. During graduate school at the University of Iowa, she had a series of unsatisfying sexual affairs, hoping to prove she was lovable. No longer eligible for medical coverage, she moved to London to take advantage of Britain's socialized medicine, and underwent a 13-hour operation in Scotland. Grealy now lives in New York City. Her discovery that true beauty lies within makes this a wise and healing book.

When Grealy was nine years old, a toothache led to a visit to the dentist, several misdiagnoses, and eventually surgery that removed most of the right side of her jaw. What she had was Ewing Sarcoma, a deadly form of cancer. In this expansion of her award-winning Harper's essay, "Mirrorings," Grealy sensitively recounts the chemotherapy she endured and the more than 30 operations she underwent in an effort to reconstruct her jaw. For Grealy, the tragedy of her situation was not the cancer but the pain of feeling ugly. As a child, she suffered the cruel taunts of classmates and insensitive stares of adults (Halloween was a great liberator with its concealing masks); as a young woman, fearing that no one would love her, she pinned her hopes on the surgeries that would magically fix her disfigured face and her life. Grealy writes with a poet's lyric grace, but her account of her endless quest for beauty at times becomes repetitious; the most moving part of her memoir comes in her depiction of chemotherapy's agonies and the unintentional cruelty of parents telling their suffering child not to cry. Equally beautiful and painful.

I first learned about Lucy Grealy through Ann Patchett’s memoir Truth and Beauty, a memoir dedicated to her complex friendship with Grealy. I almost wish I hadn’t read it first; in that case, I wouldn’t have approached this book with deep sadness for what the future was to bring for Grealy.

Grealy is a poet. Each sentence was crafted with so much love, meaning, and feeling. Throughout the book, she takes the reader into her confidence while relating her complicated relationship with herself, and acceptance of her imperfections. Diagnosed with cancer at the age of nine, Lucy spends most of her child and adult life in and out of hospitals battling the disease, and then reconstructing her face due to the aftermath of invasive treatments. Trying to define why she was destined to her painful fate, and coping with her fear of never being loved, Grealy dissects loneliness and conformity until it’s an uncomfortable kernel.

“I felt pulled in two different directions. I had tasted what it was like to feel loved, to feel whole, and I had liked that taste. But fear kept insisting that I needed someone else’s longing to believe in that love. No matter how philosophical my ideals, I boiled every equation down to these simple terms: was I lovable or was I ugly?”

I liked the way this book ended; it was almost hopeful. Grealy’s premature death was really sad. Any Google search will fill you in on the details. I wish she had been able to overcome her past, and find her happiness. What a deep loss.

Lucy is confusing

I'm ambivalent about this book. I wanted to feel some sort of connection to the author, try to understand how she felt due to this horrible experiences she suffered. Unfortunately it's just too emotionally disjointed and lacking in detail about her life. I can't imagine going thru such an experience and not have the family around you totally affected as well yet we barely hear about any of them. Yes, it's Lucy's story and not her family's, but there was just no connection for me to make her as sympathetic as I expected. Her love for horses is the only thing that came across as truly honest. But then again, how would I be if I lost so much at such a young age? I might be emotionally stunted and disjointed. So maybe there is more honesty there than I can comprehend.

Painfully pure

Lucy Grealy vividly describes her painful childhood and the horrendous journey she traveled due to a childhood cancer that stole her life. At age nine Lucy undergoes several operations to remove a cancerous tumor in her jaw. She is left disfigured and also placed in the position of having to endure 2 years of heavy chemotherapy. The repercussions of this are inconceivable.
What makes this true tale readable is Lucy Grealy's ability to write from a child's perspective while her observations are that of an adult. The story is beyond interesting and sucks you into her life.
Anyone who has ever been bullied or teased needs to multiply it by life to get a glimpse of what living under her coat is like.
Much of the story is Lucy having operation after painful operation to try to regain what most of us take for granted, normalcy. I loved her story because rarely have I read a personal account of ones tribulations that shows all the narcissism,self absorption and
Self pity that all of us feel at times in our life and for much lesser reasons. Lucy is brilliant and her writing is effortless. Her observations of her doctors,classmates, family and friends are dead on with obtuse insight. This is unlike any other book you will ever read and will stay with you for life.

those looking for supernatural intriguing short stories from a far off distant land won't be disappointed as myself was from rea

I've only seen two reviews for this book with both of them having a rating of 3 stars, but as far as I'm concerned, this work of literature as well as the vendor deserve a 5 star, while the content of the book itself is a matter of personal taste, those looking for supernatural intriguing short stories from a far off distant land won't be disappointed as myself was from reading these stories that have their own merit and have shown me a different kind of supernatural literature from a culture that is non western, learning about the different types of supernatural beings in china was very pleasing for a supernatural enthusiast like myself, I only regret there are not that many works of literature like this one being translated into English, yet this work does not disappoint, the books themselves (3 volumes) are very good quality, being hardcover and seem sturdily made for repetitive reading by many for years to come, which is nice for someone like me who rereads beloved works as this one is for me recently, so physically the books are great and durable, the vendor was also great, no errors in the process, shipping was very fast, faster than anticipated and everything accounted for, therefore I would surely recommend and buy from this vendor in the future if the occasion arises.

Chinese ghost stories for adults.

Having greatly enjoyed reading the two great Chinese mythical epics "Journey to the West" and "Creation of the Gods" previously, I turned next to Pu Songling's massive collection of supernatural tales. Pu Songling, who lived in the early Qing Dynasty period (17th century C.E.), was fascinated by stories involving ghosts, ghouls, goblins, demons and fairies. His engrossing collection of ancient Chinese tales, like those in the Japanese "Kwaidan" tradition, has spawned numerous TV and film adaptations over the years. The well-known Hong Kong movie, "A Chinese Ghost Story", was adapted and expanded from one of the tales found in this collection, as were "A Touch of Zen" and "The Painted Skin". This three-volume hardcover translation of Pu's work is a brisk read - I finished the lot (approximately 800 pages) in less than a week. Most of the tales are very short, a few pages at most, and not really scary or anything like that. There are hundreds of them here, and they do become repetitve after a while. But what surprises me most about Pu's work is the amount of SEX involved. No, there isn't any explicit description of the sexual act itself, but there are heaving bosoms and bodice rippings to be found between the covers. An inordinate amount of the stories involve illicit sex of some sort, as well as a tale or two involving magical cures for impotency or for enlarging one's equipment. The whole gamut of marital and extramarital sexual activities can be found within this collection: heterosexual, homosexual, consensual, non-consensual, incestual, bestial, sado-masochism, castration and even necrophilia (if memory serves). One tale involves a philandering cad who fathered illegitmate children with prostitutes (a son and a daughter) who then had sex with them years later (on separate occasions, thank goodness - how much more shocking would it be if it involved a threesome!) without knowing they were his children! Given the fact that Pu was writing in 17th century China, this was certainly an eye-opener. The ancient Chinese weren't always as uptight about sex as I had always thought! Pu's comments at the end of each tale also provides some interesting insight into the Chinese psyche of that time - some of which continues to be true to this very day. All in all, a fascinating collection to read, but not especially entertaining. And definitely not for children. The fabulous "Journey to the West", written a century or two before Pu's time, is a far more fascinating book to read.

...even though I gave the book 3 stars as well. Pu Songling's "Strange Tales..." is indeed a fascinating read. At first, I was put off by the abrupt endings of most of the stories (some of which constitute one paragraph in total). I mean, shouldn't a story resolve itself?

But then I realized the genius of Mr. Pu. This man is not attempting to create some sort of "Canterbury Tales", but rather, is merely travelling the countryside, collecting the folk tales of the people of each stop. In many cases, you can actually see that the villagers believed the tale they were telling, and Mr. Pu wanted to include them all to give a flavor of the country he lived in and the time he lived in. I loved the stories and found them quite fascinating inded!

So why the 3 star rating? Well, unfortunately, a work of this magnitude deserves a translation to bring it out, but here "Strange Tales..." fails to satisfy. Misprints are rife, and sometimes the sense of a statement simply cannot be made out (the translators take great pains in defining some of the scholarly positions of the time, such as juren and xiucai, which are defined multiple times; one wonders if maybe some of this effort would have been better spent in proofreading!). Names appear on pages which simply don't appear in the tale, and sometimes a name is spelt multiply different ways on the same page! Chinese names are already difficult to the average reader, and this lack of care only complicates matters further. For this reason, I give a two star deduction.

That being said, I enjoyed the work immensely. No, it's not fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, but I think that readers who are looking for this book won't be disappointed in the content.

Moonstone, which has published two collections of short stories and an original novel featuring journalist/supernatural sleuth Carl Kolchak, has reissued the two 1970s novels, in one of which he made his debut. The first, The Night Stalker, chronicles the Las Vegas reporter's first brush with the otherworldly, as his probe into a series of murders convinces him that an actual vampire is responsible. His theorizing, predictably, runs afoul of the local authorities, who seem more concerned with the risk to the tourist trade than solving the crimes. Kolchak's acerbic and cynical first-person narration is engaging, and the action is fast-paced. The second novel, The Night Strangler, which Kolchak creator Rice actually adapted from a Richard Matheson teleplay, is derivative of the first. The venue is now Seattle, but Kolchak, along with most of his supporting cast from Las Vegas, is again butting heads with his superiors and the police as he attempts to track down a killer draining blood from young women. Fans of the cult TV series starring Darren McGavin, as well as its better known successors like "The X-Files," should enjoy the author's blend of horror and humor.

Needed a proofreader

As soon as I heard that the Kolchak novels were back in print I ordered them. I have been a Nightstalker and Kolchak fan since I was a kid and enjoyed both of these novels, but I could only give this edition three stars because of so many typos. It looks like nobody proofread it before it was published. They must have used a spellcheck on it because the mistakes were spelled correctly, they were just the wrong word, or a word was left out. The mistakes were very distracting and I would catch myself looking for the next mistake instead of just enjoying the book. I don't know if I will be willing to buy another book published by Moonstone.

Kolchak is back (Yay!), and he can't proof read (Doh!)!

This edition combines the two early short novels by Jeff Rice, the "Night Stalker" and the "Night Strangler". The book is a worthy read and quite entertaining, even though it may tend to veer off a little too far to describe what Kolchak has for dinner or his cover-up gripes (a common theme for our hero).
That being said, the story of a vampire in 1970 Las Vegas is filled with mood and puts the reader firmly in the time and place of Kolchak's journal, and the action is well written and well paced.
Moonstone books have carved a great niche by reviving great pulpy characters from the past such as the Spider, the Phantom and Carl Kolchak,and their library is worth checking out. My two main complaints about this edition though, are the abundance of typos throughout the book as well as the cover design and finish, which are good but do not match the other Kolchak collections by the same publisher, so this edition will not look as good next to it's cousins on your bookshelf.
