About the Author

Jay McGavren was doing automation for a hotel services company when a colleague introduced him to Programming Perl (a.k.a. the Camel Book). It made him an instant Perl convert, as he liked actually writing code instead of waiting for a 10-person development team to configure a build system. It also gave him the crazy idea to write a technical book someday.

In 2007, with Perl sputtering, Jay was looking for a new interpreted language. With its strong object-orientation, excellent library support, and incredible flexibility, Ruby immediately won him over. He's since used Ruby for two game libraries, a generative art project, in support of a Java development job, and as a Ruby on Railsfreelancer. He's been using Rails in the online developer education space since 2011.

I am a Software Engineer with over 15 years in the industry. I use ruby professionally on a daily basis, and am Team Lead for a large project written in Ruby. As such I am always looking for good training material for Jr Engineers and new team members-- having had good luck with Head First books before I picked up "Head First Ruby".

I'm happy to say this book continues in the grand tradition of the Head First series and provides a clear, easy and precise introduction to Ruby, and I think is the easiest way to get "up and running" with Ruby. TAKE THE TIME TO DO THE EXERCISES. They are silly but you will learn.

A great book for newbies to Ruby. It explains the _why_ and not just the _what_.

This book is fantastic! It is the perfect book for someone who wants to learn Ruby, and has never programmed before. I would say that minor Terminal command line usage can be helpful, but not strictly necessary. This book starts at the very beginning, and teaches the _why_ to code a certain way, and not just the _what_. The author will present one way to do something, and then will follow with why to do it another better way, so that you get the big picture of _why_ it's the better way. I also think that this book does a great job at explaining references to Objects and the Heap to newbies. Such a normally confusing subject is just presented so well (a difficulty that I would assume is kind of metaphorically analogous to pointers in C for newbies). I also love the last couple of chapters where you make a _real_ Sinatra web app. This rocks, it takes a complete newbie to an entry level coder doing a simple Sinatra app. The book also has a homepage (in-progress, but the book is only recently published). I am also critical of a couple of other books in this series, but this one is good. I do wish he could write a sequel to this book, but alas you can only publish so much in a series. I do wish it covered concurrency, which was missing, but it really does a good job with everything it does cover. So it's a great introduction to Ruby to prepare readers for books like The Well Grounded Rubyist,[...] and Eloquent Ruby kinds of books. The style is fun and cool. As of the date of this posting Wed 2016.05.18, this book is up-to-date, and all exercises work on a recent modern Ruby. Thanks!

An exceptionally good intro to object oriented programming

I have been teaching programming for decades and I have looked at a lot of programming books... This is the first Head First book that I have liked and I *really* like it. While I know others like this series, I have found other works too full of distracting (fluff) images and wasted space. This also has a LOT of white space on each page but the writing is exceptionally good and the layout/design works well to keep the material from being too dense without wasting your time. The code is everywhere and the call outs do a lovely job of reinforcing the material. If you have not done object oriented programming this is a great place to start.

Habitudes for Communicators

An excellent resource for anyone who communicates to groups of people frequently, or infrequently. The power of an image is immense and Dr Elmore has creative a very practical resource that will stick in my mind each time I communicate. The 'Windows & Mirrors' image is especially powerful as a youth worker, as I want to help young people reflect on who they are as individuals and what they desire from and in life.

I would highly recommend this, as well as the other Habitudes resources, for anyone involved with working with young people, young adults, those who present/communicate on a regular basis and want to enhance their communication skills.

Woodson's (Miracle's Boys) affecting story introduces a boy and girl seemingly abandoned by their mother. "Sometimes my mama went away for a day. Sometimes for a lot of days. That's how it was with our mama," says Johnson. A kind woman appears at the door, explaining that her job "is to make sure little kids get taken care of"; it sounds good to Johnson, but his more cynical older sister, Beebee, warns him the woman means foster care: "It's when you live with somebody that's not your mama." Eventually, the woman drives the siblings to their mother's sister, who is estranged from their mother. Aunt Gracie is as warm and welcoming as her clapboard house with its sprawling porch, flowerbeds and tire swing. Johnson is enchanted by the idyllic setting and by his aunt, who bakes cookies and tucks him in at bedtime, and even Beebee slowly warms up to her. After a visit to their apparently hospitalized mother, who assures them that Gracie will care for them until she is able to, the two return to Gracie's open arms. Muth's (Gershon's Monster) spare paintings, often set as vignettes against a white background, effectively convey the children's sense of isolation and, later, belonging. Muth evokes the characters' emotions and supplies information that Woodson wisely omits from Johnson's narration (the emptiness of the apartment, with the children's spilled glasses and broken toy; the hospital setting). Because of Woodson and Muth's restraint, the rosy qualities of this tale do not impair its emotional truth. Ages 5-9.

Kindergarten-Grade 4-When a woman comes to their apartment one night, Beebee tells her brother, Johnson, not to open the door. And when she comes back the next morning, asking where their mother is, and how long she's been gone, Beebee says "someplace" and "a few minutes." But, in reality, the children's mother has been gone for days, and Miss Roy is the social worker who eventually takes them to live with their Aunt Gracie. Told in an understated, neutral tone by Johnson, this story packs a powerful punch. Aunt Gracie is loving and warm, and at her house there is always something to eat and a tuck-in every night. Toward the end of the book, the children visit their mother, who says, "Even when a mama loves you, she can't always take care of you." The book concludes with the youngsters having a secure home with Aunt Gracie, and the hope that their mother will eventually be able to take care of them again. This is a sensitive treatment of children entering family foster care. Wistful, subtle watercolor illustrations perfectly suit the bittersweet poignancy of the text.

It's so hard to find children's books about growing up without a parent. I with this book had been more realistic in showing the depth of the children's distress. Recommended- grades K-3.

Our Gracie Aunt is a tenderly rendered story about an imperfect and relatable mom who is temporarily unequipped to parent her two children, Beebee and Johnson. Told through the eyes of the youngest of the two, Johnson, Woodson writes with empathy and compassion. Gracie Aunt steps in to dispense the nurture and sensitivity that Beebee and Johnson need when they need it the most. It takes more than a village. It takes forgiveness, love, and less of a judgmental eye. Be inspired by this story. (I read it alone before having my 8yo daughter read it. She selected it on her own from our local library, and I'm so glad she did! She too, loves a good story.) Woodson is an incredible storyteller. I've purchased a permanent copy for my library.

Needs to be better organized

Ponto de Encontro Activities are fine

I would give the book itself, and the activities a 5 star rating. I like the layout, and it pairs well with the book, and listening exercises. find that the option to do Potugal Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese very fun. I also like how you have plenty of options and exercises to cover any topic in the book. The numbering of the activities and the pages can be confusing, but you get used to it soon. I would recommend doing the activities while learning something in the book and listening to the audio tape. I think that way, it really cements itself in. The only complaint I have was from the seller, I bought the book from. I ordered the textbook brand new, and received a used book with pen markings and completed exercises up to the second chapter, including some of the second chapter. Other than that, it is a good book.

Excellent Story Building

I love the concept of this book. Lily is a young woman who grew up in a privileged family. She had money, but the home lacked love and nurture. Lily is a nurturer and has found her calling helping girls who have come from neglect and abuse. She finds strays girls and provides a safe place for them to recover and thrive.

While helping out a young girl, she meets Jameson. He is her perfect match. He compliments her and supports her efforts. He is not he man her family envisioned for her, he comes from a nurturing home that didn't have a lot of means. But he know love and how to love. The things that Lily needed from a family.

The book started a little slow for me. It builds upon the struggles that Lily and the girls are going through. As I got about half way through the book, I started to appreciate the beginning more. It is an important part of the building of the story. I am not a huge fan of instant love, this book has that, but is done well.

This book has kissing and while there isn't current abuse, it does refer to past abuses of the girls, including sexual abuse.

When I read the synopsis of this book, I was intrigued. There are so many ways the author could go with this story:
Lily has a dream, a place of refuge for runaway girls. She knows what it’s like to grow up feeling unloved, and she now fills every space in her tiny apartment with endangered teens. They don’t have everything they need, but together they have enough. Or so she thinks—until she meets Jameson and glimpses the mysterious something between them that just might mean real love. Jameson, who works as a teen counselor, believes the only way Lily can really help the girls is by certifying as a foster parent and going through the system. But becoming legitimate may mean losing some of the girls to the families who threw them away, and Lily hasn’t worked hard to save the teens only to abandon them now. It seems Jameson will be one more entry on the very long list of things Lily has given up for the girls. What other choice is there when she is all they have? When two of the teens’ fathers come looking for them, and another one’s mother plans to put her daughter in danger, Lily’s life spins out of control. They need a new home—and fast. A safe place. A house without lies.
I enjoyed reading House Without Lies. I could feel Lily's passion for helping the teens she had in her care. I could relate to so many of her emotions. Mario, AKA Jameson, is a great character. I loved reading about Jameson's family dynamics.
Everything went too smoothly--it wasn't realistic, but it was a good read. I would be willing to read more in the series.

Patchwork Family Romance

I received my copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am a SUCKER for the bleeding heart romances - like absolute sucker, and this story delivers! Lily didn't have the most loving of childhood relationships with her parents. In fact, the closest thing to a motherly bond that she had was with her sister Tessa who was only two years her senior. You see from the start that Lily isn't bitter because of her past, she's strong - courageous and determined - and she dreams of helping others. She takes in strays, but instead of stray cats she takes in stray people - teenage girls who have been abused and mistreated, living on the streets and in need of a little love and a safe place to stay. Lily seems to have just accepted that she doesn't have time for love, until Mario Jameson Perez shows up and guess what... HE HAS A HEART AS BIG AS HERS!

I loved that Jameson (or Mario, whatever you want to call him) became a support, a champion. He wasn't fighting her battles for her, but he was there to help her fight them. He became devoted to her and her cause (that he already worked with troubled teens was a big plus!!!!) and her girls in just the right amount of time. Nothing felt too rushed, it all seemed just right even though not that much time had passed between the day they met and the day they married. Whirlwind and once in a lifetime. I'm a sucker for it... COMPLETE SUCKER!

I resented every moment I had to put this down, in fact I have already bought and jumped into the next book in the series which is Tessa's love story. The pace felt right, the almost fairy tale tropes felt right, this story just feels right! If you're looking for a fun little read, pick this one up. It's hopeful and heartwarming and everything that you'd imagine it to be.
