About the Author

Duane Brown is the author of 25 first edition books and manuals. Many of his books, including Psychological Consultation and Consultation (7th edition) have evolved into later editions, and he has published more than 40 books, including new editions, and 100 other chapters and journal articles. He has held professorships at Iowa State University, West Virginia University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has held part-time positions at the University of Vancouver, Gannon College and Drake University. Duane Brown’s consulting relationships included American Airlines, Barbados Department of Labor, and numerous community colleges, public school systems (NY, NJ, IA, WV, OH) and governmental agencies. He now does pro bono career and personal counseling. Past president of several organizations including the National Career Development Association, he is a fellow in NCDA and has received numerous awards including the NCA Ella Stephens Barrett Award and the NCDA Eminent Career Award.

Improved and Expanded 9th Edition

Now in its ninth edition, this book has become the standard of the field. It is intended to help those whose job it is to facilitate the career development process. This includes school, employment, career and rehabilitation counselors as well as other individuals who are influential in the career development process.

The ninth edition has improvements in virtually all areas, the most important of which is that it now meets all Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) standards. Another area that has been expanded is the concept of a career that changes from time to time in the workers life. Based on chaos theory, this realizes that the outlook for particular jobs, particular careers change from time to time and in unpredictable ways.

The strengths that this book brings to the subject in the form of the writing style and intellectual depth of the author remain; making this book both educational and entertaining.

Timely and relevantly updated for today's career issues

This edition of Dr. Brown's textbook is a great one for students. He has added introductions and reviews to the beginnings and ends of each chapter, helping the student clarify the pertinent information. This gives the book a much more focused readability, especially for those learning the material for the first time.

Especially important for practicing counselors is the new section on Labor Market trends and issues. Additionally helpful is the section on interventions used by career counselors.

I like Dr. Brown's comprehensive understanding of what career means to all people - not just the college-bound or college-educated. His focus on alternative careers and alternative educational pathways create a framework for counselors to use with clients of all types.

Additionally, I especially like his counseling the reader to think of their own theory, and how to use values-based, multi-cultural counseling as a model for clients. He is clearly sensitive to the needs of all people who endeavor to enter the world of work.

I ordered this book for my graduate course and was told at class that the 10 edition was reprinted. I do not recommend buying this, because there are mistakes. The correct 10th edition will have "REVISED PRINTING" above the tital of the book.

I'm not sure what to say about a book that is described as "a one-stop reference for anyone interested in fashion" that has no mention of Norman Norell or James Galanos but does devote nearly 2 pages to Charles Baudelaire, a 19th century French poet. In a word, disappointed.

great book... a classic

This book should be a required book for every engineer who works with drive-line dynamics issues. The book is well organized and the content is timeless. It's amazing: we haven't made any progress on the publication of drive-line torsional vibration since the publication of this book.

A Masterpiece in Torsional Vibration

This book is a true classic in the study of torsional vibration of engine crankshafts. Long out of print, I was estatic when I found out it was being reprinted. Highly recommended to the mechanical engineer who wants to understand the classic methodology of the subject.

Excellent! So glad this was re-issued.

This book supplied exactly what I was looking for: a comprehensive guide to applying Holzer method torsional vibration analysis to an engine crankshaft. It is well-organized and the mathematics are not out of hand although you will need some understanding of differential equations. There are lots of graphs and visual representations. I tend to prefer texts from this era (First published in 1958) to more modern publications that tend to dive into matrices and never surface. One thing I especially appreciated was that for every step of analysis Nestorides presents the formulas and methods used by other big names in this field (Timoshenko, Den Hartog, Griffeth and Taylor, etc.) for comparison.
