From the Back Cover
Marta goes to church Christmas morning to receive her piece of the manger straw. Traditionally, a piece of this straw means wealth in the coming year, something Marta and her family need. But as she’s walking home from church, Marta meets people who need the straw more than she does: an old woman; her friends Pela and Benek; and a hungry dog without a home. With a giving heart, Marta breaks off pieces of her precious straw, until there’s nothing left. When a fire destroys her house, Marta is upset that she has given away all her straw. Worried and feeling sad, Marta believes she’s now doomed to be poor. But when morning comes, Marta discovers riches she never could have imagined.

---------Warmhearted story of a Polish Christmas Tradition----------
By Judith Miller
MARTA AND THE MANGER STRAW is a gentle story of a child who had been given one stalk of straw from the manger display at her church. The priest had told her to "Take a piece of straw from the manger. Keep it with you, and you will have riches all year. And remember, Marta, there are different kinds of riches."

As the child goes through the next couple of days, she shares pieces of her straw with various people. Her Babcia (grandmother) is sick and Marta gives her a piece of the straw in the hope that her health would improve. Her little friend Pela is crying because her family's cow was lost and their source of milk was gone and again, Marta shares a piece of the straw. Another time, Marta generously gives some firewood and the manage straw to an old woman who is suffering from the cold. Literally, the last straw that Marta herself had cherished is given to a starving dog. He was begging for food and since she had no food to give him, she tied the straw into his fur.

When Marta and her mother have a horrible misfortune in their lives, all of the people that Marta had shared the straw with come forward with generous gifts. It seems that the straw had helped them all in some way.

The author, Virginia Kroll, lives in New York and has written over fifty books for children. This book was published in 2005.

The enchanting illustrations in this story were painted by Robyn Belton. I've visited Poland three times and have to say that the artist was right on target. The folk costumes, the church and other buildings all look very authentic! I loved the interior of Marta's home. The religious pictures on the wall and various other decorative items that are found in Polish homes. Also, the festive table that was set for a Christmas meal at Babcia's cottage was well done. Robyn Belton lives in New Zealand. She says, "I dedicate this book to the 732 refugee children who came to New Zealand in 1944 due to the event of the Second World War, and those whose presence has enriched our lives."

This book is part of a series called The Traditions of Faith. The series illustrates how Christian holiday customs have evolved around the world.

It is More Blessed to Give Than to Receive
By White Fang
"Marta and the Manger Straw" is a wonderful 8 7/8 inch by 11 1/4 inch hardback children's Christmas book. The book has 30 pages. Fourteen of the pages are full color full page beautiful warm pencil and watercolor illustrations by illustrator Robyn Belton. Pages with text are also illustrated with the same warm illustrations - many of which are a continuation of the opposite full color full page in a double spread style.

The author's inspiration and dedication of this book are based on a World War II event where 732 Polish refugee children came to New Zealand in 1944 due to the situation in Poland at this time. The story is based on an ancient Polish custom of taking bits of straw from church manger scenes and keeping it in your wallet, pockets, or purses. This, they believe will help them never to be without wealth in the coming year.

The story opens with Marta leaving church and her pastor telling her to take a piece of straw from the manger and to keep it with her so that she will have riches all year. Her pastor also reminds her that there are different kinds of riches. The following day Marta visits her grandmother who is sick and almost out of tea. Because of her illness, Marta's grandmother couldn't get to church to grab a piece of straw. Marta breaks off a piece of her straw and gives it to her grandmother. On her way home, Marta discovers her friend, Pela, weeping. Marta discovers that Pela's cow has run off and their is no milk or butter for Pela or her brother. The next day Marta was gathering wood and met Mrs. Wolska who was very cold and without any logs for her fire. Marta gives her a fat log and broke off another piece of her straw and shared it with Mrs. Wolski.

A sad dog with matted fur appears at Marta's house one day. Marta and her family had very little and not a bite to spare but she did have her blade of straw. She broke off another piece of straw and slipped it through a snarl in the dog's matted fur. An awful tragedy awaits Marta and her mother, Mamusia. You will want to read this book to find out about the awful tragedy and see how Marta's kindnesses are returned to her.

This book also includes an "Author's Note" page which explains the various straw customs in Poland. In addition, there is an activity page where the readers can learn how to make several Polish straw projects including straw in a manger scene, straw garlands, placement of a piece of straw in your Christmas cards, traditional straw ornaments and a straw star.

This is a wonderful children's Christmas book that teaches the valuable lesson that "It is more blessed to give than to receive". Readers of the story also learn that there different types of riches like the satisfaction that you have helped somebody who was in need. The book is also a valuable tool to teach different cultural Christmas traditions. Polish families and familes of Polish descent will especially find this book interesting and rewarding. However, the book will be enjoyed by all children. I would heartily recommend this book for children aged 4 - 10.

This is a marvelous story! The illustrations are beautiful and the story is, as well. I was aware of the tradition of using straw, and this further explained the tradition. I highly recommend this book.
