Think Twice Before Reading

THERE IS A SMALL SPOILER IN THIS REVIEW.
I'm fascinated by the mental processes that people go through when they're in the process of objectifying others -- and, from that perspective, this book is amazing. In the course of this novel, five children transform themselves into monsters and one young woman is transformed into a victim -- and, ultimately, an object. As a reader, you are pulled along on both sides of the story, observing the way that all the participants explain their behaviors and actions to themselves. You get to watch the justifications, the slow progression, the frog in the pot who's ignoring the slowly rising heat...
In some ways, Let's Go Play at the Adams' reminded me of Lars Von Trier's Dogville or of the movie adaptation of Apt Pupil. At the heart, there's the same soul sickness, the same nihilistic sense that the world is an empty and cruel place. Without giving too much away, there's no redemption or happy coda in this book. God is on vacation, and you're left with a book that documents human cruelty in minute -- sometimes boring -- detail.
Most books like this focus on gore, shying away from the stickier psychological development. This one does the opposite: Johnson seems, at times, almost squeamish about the blood and guts of the story. However, he rarely shies away from making you confront some of the worst parts of humanity. I mentioned earlier that the book is sometimes a little boring. At the same time, it's incredibly grim and unrelenting, permeated by a heavy-handed sense of doom.
When I was done, I felt just plain awful, and the feeling continued to stick with me. This book just gets inside you. Desperate for a resolution, I checked out the sequel. A few years ago, Peter Francis, a British author, wrote "Visiting the Adams," which also went under the title "Let's Go Play at the Adams' 2." It isn't that good, but it does manage to wrap up much of the moral ambiguity of the original. If you're having trouble sleeping after reading the original, I suggest giving Francis' book a try.

Gut-Wrenching!!

Let's Go Play At The Adams' was not an easy read. At times it was gut-wrenching to continue.
I went through a range of emotions while reading this. The things that happened to the babysitter, Barbara, while being tied-up and under the control of the five kids (ranging in age from 10-17) was terrible to say the least.
What started out as a game, or experiment, for these kids turns into so much more. For the first 3 chapters or so, it's a bit slow-going. There is a lot of character building in these chapters--which is crucial to this story. As the story continues, we see the innocence and human emotion being stripped away from these children. They become inhumane, cold, and monsterous.
It was very hard to see Barbara's optimisim begin to degrade when she realizes that it has become more than a game and she's not going to get out of the situation alive. When she accepts that she is going to die, I felt my heart just drop.
The last few chapters of this book were the worst. I just wanted to cry for Barbara. Reading the epilogue was hard as well. Knowing these kids would never get punished for what they did infuriated me.
Let's Go Play At The Adams' will get inside your head and turn your emotions inside out. If you think you can handle it, then give it a try.

Lets go Play at the Adams' - credible horror

I read this book many years ago and it has stuck in my mind ever since as being one of the best 'dark' novels. I longed for Mensal Johnson to write the sequel -- surely the guilty could not get away with it? While the story held together very well, the rapid ending left it hanging - it seemed unlikely that the police would accept the story of the picker being guilty over a day when injuries were obviously old and inflicted over many days. When I saw a sequel (L G P at the A 2 by Peter Francis) I had to read it. I was not disappointed at all and found it excellent. That meant I had to re-read the original and all of my expectations were met. Both books are excellent examples of a subtle horror story, similar to the award-winning "Lord of the Flies" with normal behaviour slowly building extreme horror. Not the slasher type but more credible.
