Common Sense Advice for all Instrumental and Voice Teachers

Written by respected music teacher, Paul Harris, The Virtuoso Teacher is an indispensable guide for instrumental and voice teachers wishing to hone their skills and become effective pedagogues. Topics include how to be a master communicator, getting the best out of pupils, dealing with challenging pupils, and asking the right questions. It is written in an easy-to-understand format. Much of the information is common sense, but it is very helpful to have it spelled out as a reminder of what should be done during a lesson.

My personal favorite chapter was the one on asking the right questions. It is important to stimulate pupils' minds and get them to think about the music they are playing. Mr. Harris provides some excellent examples of questions that should be asked.

I highly recommend this book for all music teachers.

While I have not finished the book at this writing, Paul Harris does an excellent job of helping both the new teacher and the seasoned teacher see the importance of various teaching methods. In addition, he stresses the necessity of understanding the entire child/student for success.

Worth its weight GOLD !

This book can DRASTICALLY reduce the amount of time you will spend revising pharmacology. Most review books are written in a paragraph form that does not at all aid the visual memorization of the page ; Something that makes one lose focus as one reads more and, after sometime, the acquired information starts to melt together into a perfectly unrecognizable cocktail that can by no means help one in an exam setting , much less in a clinical one. This book, however ,with its question-answer format, presents the information in a very memorable and thought-provoking manner that makes later revision a MUCH easier task than the revision of other review books. With all due respect to the great and famous Lippincot Pharmacology , this book is a lot better . It has almost all the information in Lippincot but written in a more user-friendly manner. It is GREAT for USMLE Step 1. Be good to yourself and buy this book.

"The book is a very fast and easy way to review Pharmacology.One can use it to learn key points about several drugs.It also helps in quick recollection of learnt facts and has the subject matter presented in an interesting question and answer format.It also has figures and tables that can be understood and remembered at a glance.Comprehensive coverage of in depth subject matter including toxicity and mechanism of various drugs .It has some useful mnemonics too.Great for the Step1 USMLE.Can be used as a companion with any Pharmacology review book."

I recently came across Pharmacology Recall in the book store and it was a great find! The book is concise so i was able to review a large amount of high yield information quickly. This book works well with lippincott's pharmacology as well. I have highly recommended it to other second years.

About the Author
Renegade fitness experts Sharny and Julius shot to stardom very quickly when their first book, Never Diet Again was released to the public in June 2011. The book was an adaptation of their step by step escape the diet trap program they created for their private clients. So successful was the program in changing people’s lives that the clients literally begged Sharny and Julius to make it into a book, which would be more accessible to friends and relatives overseas. After the release of Never Diet Again, the couple realised that while very successful, it was just another weight loss solution in a sea of thousands, if not millions of solutions. But people as a whole were still getting “fatter and sicker”. After much soul searching and deliberation, they decided that losing weight wasn’t the problem. The motivation for losing weight was the problem. Fat and unhealthy was the norm; healthy, athletic people were the minority. The word ‘fat’ had become offensive. Exercise was too much of a chore. That’s when they decided to write the book FITlosophy. In their words, it is “a collection of parables for athletes”. But after consuming it, readers agree that it is far more than that. It is a profound set of philosophical viewpoints that cut right to the heart of the human condition. Brutally honest, courageous, confronting, and often humorous, the stories told in this book reveal a part of the human psyche readers didn’t even know was there. Never Diet Again

Never Diet Again is a book that is written by real people in order to help real everyday people look and reassess the life choices they make and how to change them and make life even better and feel better in the process. I cheated with this book and read through it first as I wanted to really read it and now I have started from he start and have been completeling the weekly tables...... and being honest about them! I have found the manner in which the book is written is very un offensive and thought provoking and dispells so many theories that I have practiced before. Now I see that what Julius and Sharny are writting about makes absolute sense. It's not a race but a change in attitude that will win in the long run. VERY WORTH TAKING THE TIME TO READ AND MAKE SOME CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE! I also hook in to their website sharnyandjulius.com which is great for exercise videos and just listening to them discussing different health and fitness topics. VERY WELL DONE!

A must read for any health concious person.

Anyone interested in good nutrition should read this book. It is easily understood, well researched and interesting.I have lost 6 kilos since buying it and following it.You possibly know much of what is in here , as I did, but the book puts it all together as a user friendly package.

A concise classic.

When Lawrence M. Friedman wrote his landmark "A History of American Law," he remarked that American legal history has been a neglected field. Some progress (although not enough) has been made in the field since Friedman published his History in 1973. Part of that progress has been the publication of Grant Gilmore's little book, "The Ages of American Law," which is justly considered to be a classic. The book is based on the lectures Gilmore gave during the 150th Anniversary of Yale Law School for the Storrs Lecture Series in 1974. Although "The Ages of American Law" is an "expanded" version of the Storrs Lectures, the book is still remarkable for its concision as well as for its clarity. Gilmore does not purport to offer an authoritative history of American law in the same vein as Friedman's History. Rather, he captures the grand sweep of history and condenses it into a gem of 154 pages. It remains in print nearly twenty-five years after first publication for good reason-it is well worth reading.

Notes for a Longer Book

I don't know why The Ages of American Law is regarded as a classic of American legal history. It's clearly written but tries to cover way too much ground in a very short space (111 pages of text with large print and big margins). Based on a series of lectures, The Ages of American Law strings together short observations on legal topics ranging from Lord Mansfield to the development of the Uniform Commercial Code. No subject is developed in depth: at best, the "book" is notes for a real book. One of my professors at law school used to rave about this book. It must have been because he's mentioned favorably in an endnote.

An Excellent Primer for A Person About to Begin Law School

Grant Gilmore is best known as the author of The Death of Contract (a well-known supplementary text in law school) and as one of the most cited contracts scholars in the twentieth century. This book, however, also shows his skills as a legal historian as he tracks the progression of American law from its earliest days after the Revolution, up through the mid-1970s.

Without giving away too much of the work, Gilmore explains how each era of America viewed law through a different prism, and analyzed the forces that shaped those worldviews. For example, the era of John Marshall through the Civil War took law as an instrumental force used to regulate society, acting in conjunction with other political forces and natural law. From the Civil War up through World War One, American law schools were primarily populated by the Formalist school, which believed rules of logic could be used to deduce certain legal principles. That those legal principles almost always matched the writer's personal viewpoint was something to be politely overlooked. The final school, with modifications, is the one we follow today: Legal Realism. Its prophet was Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. and its apostle Karl Llewellyn. A legal realist sought to understand the social pressures that interact with a judge's decision-making, and see how those factors produced the ultimate ruling. While the suggestion that a judge might be influenced by what he reads in the newspaper is unsurprising today, it was very controversial in the first quarter of the twentieth century.

Gilmore throughout also peppers the text with interesting tidbits of legal history, such as how Christopher Columbus Langdell first proposed the casebook method for law schools and how law schools began using moot courts to prepare for appearances before a real judge. It also touches on some of the other experiences a law student is likely to undergo their first year, no matter where geographically or academically the school is situated. Another reviewer alluded to Lawrence Friedman's A History of American Law. Were I to offer my personal opinion, Gilmore is your best resource as you enter law school, and Friedman is your best resource as you exit. I certainly have recommended this book in person to younger friends about to enroll.

In sum, a great little book that touches on both legal theory and history that would serve as a great introduction for any prospective lawyer to American law.
